Choy (also Khoy or Khoi , Persian خوی Choi , DMG Ḫūy or Ḫōy , Kurdish and Azerbaijani Xoy ) is a city in the Iranian province of West Azerbaijan north of the city of Urmia . The population consists mainly of Azerbaijanis and a few Kurds . In 2012 the city had 478,708 inhabitants. The predominant religious group in the population are Shiites .
Choy lies in the Choy Depression and is surrounded by high mountains. This means that the winters are milder compared to the other cities. The lowest temperatures reach −14 ° C. The summers are very hot.
The region's economy is structured agrarian. Above all, fruits, grain, tobacco, cotton and timber are grown. The city's name may be derived from the Azerbaijani word qoyun for sheep . The Encyclopaedia of Islam derives the city name from the Kurdish word xoy / xwê for salt. There are many salt mines near the city.
The city had an important position as a station on the Silk Road . As a border town between Iran and the Ottoman Empire and Iran and the Russian Empire , Choy was important. Choy was attacked by Russia in 1827 and Turkey in 1911 . During the Second World War , the city was controlled by the Soviet Union .
