Kiki and Bubu: Rated R Us is an Austrian comedic musical puppet film from 2011 directed by Johannes Grenzfurthner . With a length of 50 minutes, the film has the character of a featurette . The voices of the main roles were spoken by David Dempsey and Roland Gratzer (both moderators at radio station FM4 ). The German internet expert Jens Ohlig ( Chaos Computer Club ) appears as a guest star .

The censorship-critical film was produced by the art group monochrom with the help of the Austrian television station Okto . The film and the protagonists are often cited as examples of the political and artistic work of monochrom .

background

Kiki and Bubu are two neo-Marxist hand puppets that are formed in critical theory , but still have a child-like, naive approach to the world. They were originally developed by Johannes Grenzfurthner and Frank Apunkt Schneider in 2008 for the web TV program of the American online magazine Boing Boing . The idea was to explain terms from the political discussion in the form of funny short films. The format is clearly based on TV children's programs such as Sesame Street .

In the world of Kiki and Bubu, there are minor characters that appear again and again, such as the hectic and driven online porn monster .

In 2011 monochrom decided to produce a first "almost evening-length film" with Kiki and Bubu. This film was called "Kiki and Bubu: Rated R Us" and is in the nature of a musical. The title of the film is a play on words with Toys “R” Us and the US media age rating: R - Restricted .

action

The two friends Kiki and Bubu meet in a multiplex cinema. Bubu is very pleased that he received a partner proposal on an online dating platform . It is the entire Chinese people. Kiki is interested in online dating and also wants to create a profile on the platform. It turns out that Kiki's match is the entire Chinese people too. So that the two of them can present themselves positively, they want to send the link to an old video that they put on YouTube . In doing so, they notice that the video was deleted from YouTube because it did not comply with the platform's terms of use. An old friend of Kiki and Bubu, the online porn monster , had appeared in the video, so it was deleted because of "pornographic content". Kiku and Bubu want to find out why this happened and what censorship means. Die Wise Explosion advises the two to ask the internet expert Jens Ohlig (who lives on a macaroni and cheese box). After a long journey they find Ohlig and are informed about censorship. You begin to think about feelings and emotion work ("Feelings are a means of production") and self-censorship. Then they decide the Google seek and ask why he censored the video. The Google , a saucepan with a multitude of eyes, lives in a heavenly valley, is very stressed and not particularly helpful. He makes it clear to Kiki and Bubu that the video on YouTube will be deleted because consumers rule the world. While the internet would be powered by pornography, many mainstream consumers would be religious and feel repulsed by pornographic content. He would not share this opinion, but there is no getting around mainstream consumers. He ruled the world. Google sends Kiki and Bubu into the wasteland of the “periphery”, where all “failures of the information society” would find refuge. There they meet the Sad Porn tape , a porn - VHS -Videoband, which is sad to be obsolete technology. It has no friends because no one would watch porn tapes anymore, so the tape would have become a singer-songwriter now . Coincidentally, the Happy Porn Cassette shows up and announces that old videotapes are now being digitized and uploaded to a website called YouPorn . The Sad Porn Cassette is happy about it and wants to accompany the Happy Porn Cassette . Kiki and Bubu have the idea to put their video cassette on YouPorn as well. This would help them avoid censorship on YouTube. Happy that they have concluded the adventure positively, they return home. However, there they will receive mail from YouPorn. Your video can't be shown on YouPorn because it wouldn't actually show pornographic content. The online porn monster would be too little. Kiki and Bubu still cannot send a video to the Chinese people and are very sad. They console themselves with drinking chocolate from Bubu's mother.

production

script

The screenplay was written by Frank Apunkt Schneider and Johannes Grenzfurthner in collaboration with the American artist Nathan Boyer. Boyer met monochrom in 2010 during his stay as artist in residence in the Museumsquartier in Vienna.

financing

The film was supported by the Viennese television broadcaster Okto and the film funding of the City of Vienna's Magistrate 7.

Filming and editing

The shooting was carried out within one day on December 13, 2010 in the Okto studio in Vienna. A common stage in puppet theater was set up and filmed. The entire film was completed in two weeks.

distribution

The film has been shown at various festivals and conventions (e.g. in Vienna, Los Angeles, New York, Orlando), broadcast on Okto and is also available online for free download. The film was also shown as a video installation at the 54th Venice Biennale in the special exhibition Future Pass - From Asia to the World . As part of the Porn Film Festival Vienna 2019, the film was shown as an interesting examination of porn and censorship.
