Kim Min-seok ( Korean : 김민석, 金 民 錫 ; * June 14, 1999 ) is a South Korean speed skater .

Career

Kim had his first international success at the 2014 Junior World Championships in Bjugn . There he won the gold medal in the team pursuit. In the following year he won the silver medal over 1500 m at the Junior World Championships in Warsaw , in the team pursuit and in the all-around and the gold medal in the team sprint. In November 2014 he started the World Cup in Obihiro for the first time and finished fourth in Division B over 1500 m. In 2015 and 2016 he was South Korean champion over 1500 m. At the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer , he won the 1500 m and the gold medal in the mass start. In March 2016, at the Junior World Championships in Changchun, he won the silver medal in the 1000 m, 5000 m and all-around and the gold medal in the 1500 m, in the team pursuit and in the mass start. In the 2016/17 season he achieved his first podium finishes in the World Cup with third place in the team pursuit in Harbin and rank in the team pursuit in Nagano . In February 2017, at the Winter Asian Games in Obihiro, he won bronze in the mass start and gold in the 1500 m and in the team pursuit. At the individual distance world championships in Gangwon he came in 21st place in the mass start and in fifth place over 1500 m. At the beginning of the 2017/18 season he won his first World Cup victory in the team pursuit in Heerenveen . At the season highlight, the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he won the bronze medal in the 1500 m and silver in the team pursuit. In March 2018 he won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships in Salt Lake City over 1500 m and the gold medal in the team pursuit in the team sprint.

In the 2018/19 season, Kim achieved second place in the overall World Cup over 1500 m with two third places in Tomaszów Mazowiecki and Hamar, each over 1500 m. At the individual distance world championships in Inzell in 2019 , he ran to 20th place over 1500 m and seventh place in the team pursuit.
