Kim Yŏng-nam (also written Kim Jongnam ; born February 4, 1928 in the district of Myŏngch'ŏn-gun, sub -province of Kankyō − hokudo , then the Japanese Empire , now North Korea ) is a politician of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

He was from 1998 to April 2019 Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK in order of protocol head of state, and since 1980 a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee (CC) of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). Since October 2010 he is also a member of the Presidium and Presidium of the Politburo of the Labor Party of Korea.

Life

Kim Yŏng-nam was born when Korea was a province of the Japanese Empire . According to the Japanese reading of 金永南 , his name is Kin Einan . In the 1950s he studied in the Soviet Union and became vice chairman of the Committee for Foreign Cultural Relations and the National Committee for the Protection of Peace . From 1956 he worked in the department for foreign policy at the Central Committee of the PdAK. In 1961 he became deputy chairman of the PdAK in the province of South Hamgyŏng , about 1970 a member of the PdAK central committee and in 1972 chairman of the foreign policy department of the PdAK central committee.

From 1983 to 1998 he was Minister for Foreign Affairs of the DPRK.

He was formally considered "number two" in the DPRK's leadership behind Kim Jong-il , who was Chairman of the National Defense Commission of the DPRK and General Secretary of the PdAK until his death on December 17, 2011 . Kim Yŏng-nam kept his post under Kim Jong-il's son and successor, Kim Jong-un . Media reports saw his position strengthened after the execution of Jang Song-thaek , who was thought to be a background puller.

Others

Kim Yŏng-nam's younger brother Kim Ki-nam is also a high party official. He is responsible for media and culture and is considered the leading ideologist of the state party.
