action
The film takes place during the First World War . Corporal Arthur Hamp is during the Third Battle of Ypres the desertion accused. The simple young man from the lower class is to be defended by the upper class Captain Hargreaves. Hamp was the only survivor of his company. Confused, he went for a walk and was arrested by the military police after 24 hours. He is suspected to have been on his way home to London and is now being tried in the military tribunal. At first, the differences in class between the defense attorney and the defendant become very clear. Defender Hargreaves is arrogant and arrogant. However, the longer he deals with Hamp, the more sympathetic and understandable the young man becomes. Hargreaves begins to fight for him, but the judiciary decides to make an example so as not to undermine the troops' willingness to go to war. Despite all concerns, Hamp is sentenced to death. When the firing squad refuses to judge him, he is finally killed by a pistol shot in the mouth.

Awards
The world premiere took place in 1964 at the Venice International Film Festival , where the film took part in the competition. Tom Courtenay was awarded the Coppa Volpi for best actor. The film also received four British Film Academy Award nominations the following year .
