The nave and choir of the church of Östergarn ( Swedish Östergarn kyrka ) on the Swedish island of Gotland were built in the middle of the 13th century. Both structures are almost square in plan. This shape of the nave is unusual.

In the west, the church was to be completed by a tower adjoining the nave . This construction project was never realized. Instead, the church on the nave gable, above the simple portal with the keel-arched tympanum disc , received a roof turret as a bell chair. The sacristy was built in 1786.

The church of Östergarn is one of the churches on Gotland that was hard hit in the Middle Ages . It was damaged by fire in 1565 during the Seven Years of Northern War . The vault of the nave and the medieval inventory items were destroyed. The portals on the south side were affected by fire. At the beginning of the 17th century, the sandstone baptism with the name of the Danish King Christian IV was purchased. During the Great Northern War , the church was sacked by Russian troops in 1715 and 1717 and was long in ruins.

Under the direction of Provost it was restored (plaque on the wall of the chorus) (1725-1758) Lars Nilsson Neogard (1683-1758). The pulpit (1737), the gallery (1744) and the altarpiece (1756) with integrated crucifix and a large part of the stalls date from this period . The organ facade was built in 1850 according to plans by F. W. Scholander, a famous architect at the time . The organ work dates from 1915 and has five registers . The church was restored in 1935 according to plans by the architect Erik Fant (1889–1954). In 1978 an external restoration was carried out, during which some details of the portals were reworked or replaced.

In the cemetery on the east wall of the choir there is a memorial stone for the 28 perished soldiers of the German warship Albatross , which was grounded on July 2, 1915 in a sea battle with Russian ships off Östergarnsholm . The incident went down in the annals of naval warfare as the Albatross Affair or Gotland Raid .
