The Church of Akebäck ( Swedish Akebäck kyrka ) is (apart from the sacristy) a Romanesque country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . She belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Akebäck in the pastorate Roma in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located inland between roads 142 and 143, 12 km southeast of Visby , 6 km northwest of Roma and 21 km north of Klintehamn .

Church building

The church is a well-preserved Romanesque building made of plastered limestone . The nave , the choir and the apse were built in the second half of the 12th century. In the middle of the 13th century, the sturdy tower followed in the west with round-arched sound openings, which are provided with columns and decorated with bricks. A little later the nave was modernized and raised. Only the roof ridge was raised, making the roof angle steeper. The sacristy was added to the north side of the nave from 1931 to 1932. The main entrance to the church is a Romanesque portal on the south facade of the tower with a hewn surround. A small Romanesque portal is on the south side of the choir. The former south portal of the nave was moved to the north side of the tower when the tower was built, but has since been bricked up. Near the choir portal is a stone with images of a reclining man with a hammer who could be a master stonemason.

Bildstein

In 1931/32 the church was restored according to plans by the architect Sven Brandel. A sacristy was erected on the north side of the church and an approximately 3 meter high stone , which had been discovered in the outer wall of the nave, was placed between the church and the old granary.

Furnishing

The simple interior is characterized by uniform furnishings from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. You can find acanthus paintings on the chairs and on the flat wooden ceiling of the nave. In the original walled barrel vault of the choir there are three walled-in sound pots (Swedish : ljudkrukor ) made of clay , which improve the acoustics . The vaulted tower room is illuminated in the west through a window in the original cross format, which is surrounded by carved stone. In the east wall of the archway of the south portal is a walled-in holy water bowl, which was later converted into a poor fund.

  • The limestone font was carved in the 13th century and has a 16-sided bowl.
  • In the middle of the altar is a wooden cross from the 15th century.
  • The altar and the pulpit are from the 17th century.
  • A large chandelier was given to the church in 1680 by the master carpenter Johan Pettersson .
  • The organ was built in 1959 by Andreas Thulesius from Klintehamn .
