Fleringe Church
The Church of Fleringe ( Swedish Fleringe kyrka ) is a Gothic - Romanesque country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Bunge (previously Fleringe), to the pastorate Bunge and to the diocese of Visby .
location
The church is north of the road 148 from Visby to Fårö , 43 km northeast of Visby. It is located between a few courtyards in open terrain in the sparsely developed and wooded northernmost part of the island.
Church building
The church is made of limestone and consists of a straight final choir with a sacristy in the north and a higher and wider nave and a tower in the west, which is the same width as the nave. There are entrances in the nave and choir on the south side and in the tower on the west side. The choir and nave were built in the second quarter of the 13th century, the tower in the third quarter. The sacristy was probably built shortly before 1650. A heavy fire in 1676 is said to have led to certain reconstruction work. The three original portals of the church have simple Gothic surrounds. The portal in the west is the largest and decorated with vegetal ornaments. This was probably intended as the main entrance. The small ogival window openings in the east and south are still original, as are the columned sound openings in the tower. Inside the church is completely vaulted. The four brick vaults of the nave are supported by a strong central column. The choir and the tower room are each covered by a vault. The arch between the tower and the nave in the west has the same width and shape as the triumphal arch between the nave and choir in the east. Individual frescoes from the 15th century and a strange ornament from the last part of the 16th century have been preserved. The furniture with its original painting dates entirely from the 18th century.
Furnishing
Because of the church fire in 1676, the medieval inventory is missing.
- The font is from the 1630s and was moved to this church after the fire. Before that he was in Visborgs Slottskyrka .
- The altar from 1701 was made by Rasmus Bartsch.
- The pulpit is from 1726.
- The organ with five voices was installed in 1966 by John Grönvall Orgelbyggeri from Lilla Edet .
Surroundings
- The church stables still stand on an open plain to the west of the church, which is very unusual on Gotland.
- In the southwest corner of the church garden there is a medieval entrance portal with a barrel vault . Traces of another portal can be found in the north wall of the churchyard.
