Levide Church

The Church of Levide is a Romanesque country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Levide in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located in the southwestern interior of Gotland, west of the road 141 from Klintehamn to Hemse , 50 km south of Visby , 12 km southeast of Klintehamn and 8 km northwest of Hemse. The church is centrally located in the parish (Swedish socken ) Levide on the Ancyluswall, whose gravel and sandy soil has resulted in a good building site.

Church building

The limestone church is except the sacristy a fully Romanesque construction. The floor plan consists of a three-aisled nave with an apse in the east and a tower in the west. The nave and the choir are made of square-shaped building stones erected, while the tower of carved stone blocks. The construction time should be in the first half of the 13th century. The sacristy on the north side of the choir was added in the 18th century. The nave and the apse have a uniform facade with the bare stone walls and the arched frieze on the upper mural cornice. The tower and the sacristy are plastered and whitewashed. The nave and the lower choir have wood in the form of gable roofs covered. The apse has a conical outer roof. The tower has round-arched, pillared sound openings and is crowned by an octagonal spire. The church's relatively small window openings vary in shape. The changes were made at a later date. The round window in the south wall of the tower is original, while the south tracery windows were probably added during a modernization at the beginning of the 14th century. The choir has a round arch portal. The tower portal is ogival with decorated capitals . The large portal of the nave is provided with an interesting capital structure, which is attributed to the master stonemason Calcarius . The new cross vaults of the church interior rest on four massive columns. The pointed triumphal arch was given its shape during the modernization in the 14th century. The side niches with the quatrefoil windows on both sides of the arch are remarkable . The choir is covered by a low cross vault. The apse has a vaulted helmet. A double arched tower arch connects the nave with the tower room. In the nave there are paintings by the Passion Master or from his workshop from the 15th century. The square painting of the triumphal arch is probably from around 1300, while the acanthus tendrils on the apse vault date from the 17th century. The church was restored from 1902 to 1903 and from 1956 to 1957, this time under the direction of the architect Nils Arne Rosén.

The rune stones G 75 to G 77 are in the church .
