history

According to tradition, the Benediktbeuern monastery was once supposed to be built on the site of the chapel . After this did not come about, the Antdorf pastor Matthäus Koch asked the Benediktbeurer Abbot Magnus Pachinger in 1710 for a cross portrait from the 12th century, which was supposed to commemorate the formerly planned foundation of the monastery. When he received the cross, a wooden chapel was also built for protection, which fell victim to a storm on June 20, 1792. Only the crucifix and the figures of Mater Dolorosa and St. Johannes remained largely undamaged.

In spring 1793, today's Kirnberg Chapel was finally built of stone. The building materials and the craftsmen were paid for by the innkeeper and church provost Jakob Riederauer at the time, who stipulated that after his death he should be celebrated an anniversary every year around Jakobi . This anniversary was continued until around 1900.

The ceiling fresco was created in 1794 by the Munich painter Franz Seraph Kirzinger . The painting in the choir shows the birth of Christ , the one in the nave shows the Ascension .

Over a century, the chapel gradually deteriorated. Due to the air pressure during the gun shooting on the Kirnberg , a window was also shattered. The Antdorf pastor Mahler finally called on the community to restore the chapel; this also advocated the Kgl. General Conservatory of Art Monuments in Bavaria , after the conservator Karl Döttl examined the frescoes and described them as worth preserving. The restoration was finally carried out by master painter Walter Lindner from Weilheim in 1908 and 1909, under Döttl's leadership. In addition, the floor was covered with Solnhof tiles.

The Romanesque crucifix made of linden wood was renovated and preserved in 1963 by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in Munich. It was created around 1160/70 and is on permanent loan from the Antdorf Catholic Church Foundation in the Bavarian National Museum . In the Kirnberg Chapel there is now a cross from the 18th century. In return, the parish received a statue of Mary from 1470/80, which today adorns the left side altar of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul .

The figures of Mater Dolorosa and St. Johannes from the previous building were also in today's Kirnberg Chapel, but can now be found in the Antdorf morgue.

The Kirnberg Chapel is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian Monument List.
