The Klagenfurt district at the end of the 18th century, with a brief description

The Klagenfurt district was an administrative unit of the Duchy of Carinthia in Inner Austria . It was also known as Lower Carinthia.

Emergence

The district was created as part of the administrative reform under Maria Theresa from 1748 and was named after the city of Klagenfurt . At its head was a district chief who ran the district office with officials. This was the first time that an administrative facility was created that was located between the administrations of the manors and the government level.

location

In the north of the Klagenfurt district was the Judenburger Kreis ( Duchy of Styria ), in the northeast the Grazer Kreis (northern Lower Styria), in the east the Marburger Kreis (central Lower Styria), in the southeast the Cillier Kreis (southern Lower Styria), in the south the Laibacher Kreis ( Duchy of Krain ) and in the west of the Villacher Kreis (also called Upper Carinthia).

The Klagenfurt district thus comprised the districts of St. Veit an der Glan , Wolfsberg , Klagenfurt and Klagenfurt Land and the Völkermarkt district , in today's Slovenia the historical region of Slovenska Koroška, depending on the territorial status of Austria .

There were also 1657 villages and inhabited areas. Furthermore, the district was politically divided into 111 advertising districts.

language

The Klagenfurt district covers a large part of today's bilingual area in Carinthia (with the exception of the Gail valley). This was also the case during the monarchy. For example, in the “renewed patriotic papers for the Austrian imperial state” of 1815, the following can be read: “This group has two idioms at home, the German and the Wendish. The former is spoken in a much larger area than the latter, which is only widespread on the state stretch between the borders of Krain, the Cillier district of Steyermark, and the Drava, which meanders through the Klagenfurt district. It only crosses the banks of the Drau at Klagenfurt and Völkermarkt. Incidentally, a lot of the Wende are also familiar with the German language. ” See also: Carinthian Slovenes

economy

At the time of the Habsburg monarchy, mining was particularly dominant in the Klagenfurt district. Evidence of this can still be found in Hüttenberg (Austria) or in the area around Prevalje (today Slovenia). Furthermore, livestock is more widespread than farming.
