Klaus Dieter Pfeffer (born May 19, 1962 in Aalen ) is a German physician , immunologist and molecular biologist . In 2004 he received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize of the German Research Foundation for his work . Klaus Pfeffer studied human medicine at the University of Ulm from 1981 to 1987 and obtained his license to practice medicine . From 1987 to 1989 he worked at the University's Institute of Medical Microbiology and Immunology and received his doctorate in 1988 . In 1989 he then worked for a few months in the local medical clinic and polyclinic in the infectious disease department .

He then went to the Technical University of Munich as a research assistant in the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene, to which his doctoral supervisor had switched. This was followed by a two-year research stay at the Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto , for which Pfeffer received a scholarship for infection biology from today's Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In 1997 he got a C3 professorship for Medical Microbiology and Molecular Infection Immunology at the Technical University of Munich and was deputy director of the institute from 1998. In addition, he worked as a medical assistant at the Clinic and Polyclinic for Surgery at the Technical University of Munich and completed his specialist degree in microbiology and infection epidemiology in 2001. In 2002 he became director of the Institute for Medical Microbiology at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf .

Since November 1, 2014, Pfeffer has been Vice Rector for Strategic Management and Equal Opportunities at Düsseldorf University.

Pepper focuses its research on the reactions of the immune system to infection with bacteria . He was able to contribute significantly to the explanation of the function of the cytokines . He also co-developed the molecular biological method of gene targeting , with which important functions of the immune system could be elucidated. Another area of ​​research is the immune reaction in organ transplants . Together with Ulrich Koszinowski, he heads the project Infectious Diseases and Inflammation: a genome-wide search for specific and general regulatory processes within the framework of the National Genome Research Network (NGFN).
