Klaus Schäfer (politician)

Klaus Schäfer (born June 21, 1945 ) is a German educational scientist and former political official of the SPD. Between 2010 and 2012 he was State Secretary in the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Life

After attending primary school in Hamm (1951–1959), training as a young worker at the Deutsche Bundesbahn (1959–1962) and working as a works supervisor there (1962–1968), Schäfer studied social work at the higher technical school for social work and University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund (1968–1972), which he graduated in 1972 as a social worker (FH) . From 1971 to 1972 he worked for the German Trade Union Federation at the same time as his studies . From 1972 to 1977 he completed a degree in educational sciences with a focus on adult education, psychology , sociology and law at the Free University of Berlin , from which he graduated as a qualified pedagogue .

This was followed by an activity as a consultant for youth policy and youth welfare at the state association of North Rhine-Westphalia of Socialist Youth in Germany - Die Falken (1977-1979), as managing director of the working group for youth welfare in Bonn (1979-1989), as head of department (1990-1998) and as group leader (1998–2002) in the field of child and youth policy and child and youth welfare in the Ministry of Youth of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . From 2003 to 2010 Schäfer was head of the youth and children department , initially in the Ministry for Schools, Youth and Children of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia , later (from 2005) in the Ministry for Family, Generations, Women and Integration in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia . From 2006 he was still an honorary professor at the Faculty of Education at Bielefeld University .

On July 16, 2010, Minister Ute Schäfer appointed Schäfer State Secretary of the Ministry for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in the Kraft I cabinet. After the election to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia in the 16th electoral period (2012), he was also a member of the Kraft II cabinet in the same function before he retired at the end of September 2012. His successor in the office of State Secretary was Bernd Neuendorf .

On October 9, 2017, Schäfer replaced Susana dos Santos Herrmann in the SPD parliamentary group of the Cologne city council. He was previously the parliamentary group's cultural policy spokesman.

Private

Schäfer is married and has two children.
