from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Klaus Werner (born November 19, 1928 in Landeshut , Silesia ; † April 12, 2013 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German botanist . His specialties were geobotany and systematics (biology) . Its botanical author abbreviation is " K.Werner ".

Life

Klaus Werner's father was a print shop owner and newspaper publisher. After the 4th grade of high school he served in the heavy flak as an air force helper , initially in Berlin at the age of 15 and later in Upper Silesia . On January 22, 1945 he was injured in both legs by shrapnel and stayed in the hospital in the Wittekind School in Halle until February 26, 1946. He finished school in 1946 at the Francke Foundations in Halle, initially without a degree. Therefore, he was denied access to the course.

In 1958 Werner married the agricultural-technical assistant Irene Telle. Irene and Klaus Werner had three children. In 1958 Werner was supposed to be dismissed from the civil service because of statements hostile to the state, but after intervention by Hermann Meusel he was confirmed as a research assistant at the University of Halle on September 1, 1959.

Create

Until 1951 he held a position as a technical assistant at the Institute for Crop Plant Research in Gatersleben . The institute of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society founded by Hans Stubbe in Vienna was re-established there. In May 1947, with the approval of Hans Stubbe, Klaus Werner was admitted to the pre-semester at Halle University , passed the Abitur in August 1948 and began studying biology. Even at the beginning of his studies, he worked as an assistant to the lecturer Werner Rothmaler in lectures, identification exercises and excursions.

Werner wrote his diploma thesis with Hermann Meusel under the title Die Wuchsformen der Genus Isoplexis Lindl. ex Benth. 1954 in Halle. He received half a position at the Institute for Systematics and Plant Geography and devoted himself to the valuable herbarium . It was in poor condition, the approx. 50,000 cryptogams were disordered, the approx. 170,000 sheets largely disordered. In recognition of his work, Werner was named a research assistant at the institute. In his second report on the herbarium in 1988, he put the number at 420,000 copies.

His dissertation on the subject of growth form and distribution as the basis of the taxonomic structure of Digitalis L. was carried out in 1961 at the University of Halle. It forms the basis for knowledge about thimbles and was confirmed in 2003 by molecular taxonomic studies of the DNA , mainly by Günther Heubl . From 1961 Werner dealt with taxonomic processing of the genus Carlina . In 1968 he received a quarterly scholarship to stay at Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew) and Edinburgh , where he worked on the genus Cirsium . At home he continued the work for the " Flora Europaea ". In 1969 he was appointed custodian of the herbarium and edited volumes 2 to 4 of the " Exkursionsflora von Deutschland" founded by Rothmaler .

In addition to scientific studies, botanical identification exercises and excursion support have been the focus of his interest for over 30 years. In 1989 Werner became a disability pensioner, but looked after the herbarium until he retired on December 1, 1993, and was succeeded by Uwe Braun . In retirement, Werner especially improved the “excursion flora”.
