The Kleine Spreewald is a local recreation area in the small town of Uebigau-Wahrenbrück in southern Brandenburg in the Elbe-Elster district . Here it is located on the Kleine Elster , a tributary of the Black Elster , into which it flows a few hundred meters later.

history

The estuary of the Kleiner Elster is characterized by numerous rivers and ditches that run through the meadow landscape between the two rivers. In 1977 they began to navigate the small river system with Spreewald barges near the historic Elstermühle in Wahrenbrück and to develop a tourist attraction. The first ferryman from Wahrenbrück is said to have been the last miller of the Wahrenbrück mill, Heinz Linge.

At the present time the Kleine Spreewald is an important location for the urban infrastructure and in regional water tourism. Here is a small park with a boat landing stage and the associated boathouse, from which tours are offered all year round using Spreewald barges. Furthermore, since 2012 canoes can be rented here, with which you can explore the area yourself. There is a small cafe right next to the boathouse. That is why the Kleine Spreewald is also popular with various coach operators and visited by school classes.

In the immediate vicinity, next to the Elstermühle, there is an animal enclosure, a retirement home and a day-care center .

Elstermühle Wahrenbrück

The building ensemble of the historic Elstermühle can be found in the immediate vicinity of the landing stage in the Kleiner Spreewald .

The mouth of the Kleine Elster is also a traditional mill location. A water mill was first mentioned in a document here as early as 1248 . Originally a grinding mill of the Dobrilugk monastery , it was briefly converted into an iron hammer in 1320 , presumably to process the iron ore, which at that time was abundant in the lowland as lawn iron stone . After the secularization of the monastery, it became the Electoral Saxon office mill . From 1696 a paper mill was built here next to the grinding mill . Operated side by side for a long time, only the paper mill remained at the site, which was converted back into a grinding mill in 1858 and only finally shut down in 1998.

The main building of the mill, built in 1805, is currently a listed building and can be viewed on request and on various event days.

Tourist connection

A few hundred meters west of the area runs the federal road 101, with which the Kleine Spreewald is connected via the state road 65. In addition, several cycle paths along the Black Elster connect the city and the Little Spreewald with the sights in the surrounding area and the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft nature park . With the Brandenburg Tour , which opened in 2007, Germany’s longest long-distance cycle route, at 1,111 kilometers, touches Wahrenbrück. Further cycle routes are the 108 km long Schwarze-Elster-Radweg and the coal-wind & water route, opened in 2007 , a 250 km long energy historical foray with 14 stations through the Elbe-Elster-Land .
