The Coptic Orthodox Monastery of Saint Anthony is the name of a monastery in Waldsolms - Kröffelbach (short: Kröffelbach Monastery ), which belongs to the Coptic Church and is the spiritual center of the Copts in German-speaking countries. Since Whitsun 2010 it has been the first monastery on mainland Europe to be officially accredited by the Coptic Orthodox Church.

The St. Antonius Monastery is the oldest and most important Coptic monastery in Germany. It was named after the first of the monks, Saint Anthony the Great .

The monastery is home to the first church in Europe that was built in the Coptic style. The spacious church was built on the model of Coptic architecture as a domed structure with a separate bell tower and has three altars . The church was decorated with modern icons and frescoes by Egyptian artists .

The monastery is a house of prayer and meditation , a hostel for the monks and guests who are looking for peace and comfort. The Coptic monastery is also visited by Christians of other denominations . It also functions as a center where seminars, meetings and other events take place.

The pastoral care of the Copts in the German-speaking area is coordinated from the monastery and at the same time also performed in a variety of ways, because this is where most of the supraregional Coptic events take place. The religious education of the Copts in particular should be guaranteed from the monastery. The writings of the Coptic popes are published and distributed and appropriate educational events are held.

location

The St. Antonius Monastery is located in the Waldsolms area on the lower Taunus , surrounded by mountains, valleys and forests, right on the outskirts of Kröffelbach . It is about 15 km to Wetzlar , 20 km to Butzbach , 25 km to Gießen and 60 km to Frankfurt am Main .

Theological Institute

The Coptic Orthodox Theology College of Pope Schenuda III has been located in the monastery since 2002 . , which is subordinate to the theological faculty of the bishop for teaching and religious institutes and by Pope Schenuda III. is directed. This theological faculty is the continuation of the old theological faculty of Alexandria and represents Alexandrian theology and orthodox teaching. At this institute, Coptic Orthodox theology can be studied in a four-year course leading to the “ Baccalaureus of Theological Sciences ” (BA in Theology). Religion teachers and deacons in particular are trained there.

history

In 1975, Father Salib Sourial was brought to Germany by Pope Schenuda III. Sent to support the Coptic Bishop Anba Samuel in his efforts to establish a monastery and center for the Copts in Germany.

In 1980, a two-hectare property in the Solmsbach valley in Kröffelbach with two old buildings was acquired by the Copts in Germany and the first monks from the Coptic Baramous monastery in Wadi El-Natrun in Egypt were sent to Kröffelbach.

On April 7, 1980 the first liturgy was celebrated.

In November 1990, Pope Shenuda III accepted. the inauguration of the new church.

In November 2002, teaching began at the Institute for Coptic Orthodox Theology with over 30 male and female students.

In Pentecost 2010 the monastery was opened by the Holy Synod of the Coptic Orthodox Church in Cairo under the direction of Pope Schenuda III. accepted.

In December 2015, the adjoining residential building in the attic was damaged so badly by a fire that it is now uninhabitable. The damage is around € 300,000
