Blank cartridge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A blank cartridge or maneuver or display ammunition is understood to be a cartridge that does not release a projectile or projectile when the shot is triggered . The crack of the explosion of the propellant charge simulates a real live shot. Other alternative names are blind , bang , salute and training cartridges , and in the Swiss Army also marker ammunition .

application

Blank cartridges serve as a substitute for live ammunition in military combat exercises for safety or cost reasons and can be used together with the laser simulator (e.g. training device duel simulator or Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System ).

In military ceremonies, blank cartridges are used for gun salutes or salvos.

Propellant cartridges are blank cartridges with a stronger propellant charge. These are used in line-throwing rifles and for firing rifle and tear gas grenades .

In film and television productions, blank cartridges are used almost exclusively when shooting. This is primarily for safety, especially since any effects of a real cartridge and the appearance of flying tracer bullets can be easily imitated by film trick and CGI .

In the new production of historical events blanks are often used.

In sport they are used in starting pistols to trigger a start signal.

In alarm pistols , they are also used to fire light ammunition .

In the building industry , so-called drive cartridges with nitroglycerin - containing nitrocellulose powder are used as a propellant for setting steel nails. The usual DX cartridges made by Hilti consist of brass-colored sheet metal and a filling of 105–410 mg net explosive mass . The calibers are 5.5 (0.22 inch), 6.3 or 6.8 (0.27 inch) mm x 10-18 mm in length. A bulge protrudes all around the bottom, which is filled with initial explosives and is used for ignition by a firing pin. The cartridge is incompletely closed at the front due to the metal sheet being folded in several times. A piston accelerated with the propellant charge hits a hardened steel nail with a typically 4 mm diameter and a spherically ground tip, which can penetrate 10 mm structural steel or penetrate into concrete. In the case of the Hilti bolt setting tool DX 860-ENP can impact energy be up to 609 J.

In animal slaughter , blank cartridges are used as a propellant for slaughter guns.

Starter cartridges are blank cartridges that are not used in a weapon or the like, but are used to start engines. The principle is also called the Coffman starter. The gas pressure of the cartridge, like an electric starter, gets the engine going so far that it continues to run on its own.

In pest control, blank cartridges are used as a charge for scrap devices.

construction

In terms of structure, a blank cartridge differs from a live cartridge in that it does not have a bullet and the necessary modifications: Many blank cartridges have a crimped case mouth (e.g. 7.62 × 51 mm or 9 mm square rim for a revolver), i.e. a case folded at the top. Other cartridges, such as the 9 mm space PAK for pistols, have a plastic cap, which, like the crimp, is used to fix the powder and to build up pressure.

Another feature of calibers that are fired from live weapons is usually a tactile safety device in order to avoid confusion with live ammunition (additional tactile features such as grooves or the like). Ammunition that is intended exclusively for salute weapons usually has no additional marking, as design features of weapons and ammunition prevent live ammunition from being fired from salute weapons.

With gas pressure and recoil loaders , such as the G36 rifle , a maneuvering cartridge device often has to be screwed onto the barrel muzzle in order to generate sufficient pressure for the weapon to automatically load. In addition, the maneuver cartridge device reduces the risk of injury. The maneuver ammunition may have to generate the energy to operate the mechanics of the weapon or to simulate the muzzle flash, in addition to the bang effect. However, blank cartridges are not safe. The powder gases, entrained cartridge parts or foreign bodies as well as the pressure of the escaping gases can cause serious injuries (especially to the eyes) or even death if gunshots are applied or in close proximity to people.

Legal

According to Annex 1 of the German Weapons Act (WaffG), subsection (3) “1.2 Cartridge ammunition (cases with charges that do not contain a projectile)” and subsection (1) “2.6 Alarm weapons; these are firearms with a cartridge chamber which are intended for firing cartridge ammunition ”.

Blank cartridges are cartridge ammunition.

Cartridge ammunition with the corresponding PTB approval is possible in Germany from the age of 18. Cartridge ammunition that is not approved by the PTB (e.g. also the maneuvering cartridge shown) are subject to the same acquisition requirements as "live" ammunition.
