Knut Backhaus

Knut Backhaus (born July 27, 1960 in Schwerte ad Ruhr) is a German Roman Catholic priest , theologian and New Testament scholar .

Life

Knut Backhaus studied philosophy and Catholic theology and was a research assistant at the chair for exegesis of the New Testament at the Theological Faculty in Paderborn from 1985 to 1986 . On May 21, 1988 Archbishop he donated Johannes Joachim Degenhardt in Paderborn Cathedral, the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

In 1989 he was at the Theological Faculty of Paderborn Dr. theol. PhD . This was followed by the post-doctoral degree from 1990 to 1994 at the Seminar for Exegesis of the New Testament of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster . From 1991 he was a research assistant there. In 1994 he took over the chair for exegesis of the New Testament at the Theological Faculty in Paderborn. Also in 1994 he completed his habilitation with venia legendi for exegesis of the New Testament and worked as a private lecturer in Münster.

From 1994 to 2003 he was full professor of exegesis of the New Testament at the Theological Faculty in Paderborn, where he also held the rectorate from 2000 to 2002. In spring 2003 he was offered the professorship for Exegesis of the New Testament and Biblical Hermeneutics at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU). From 2011 to 2013 he held the office of dean.

Since March 1, 2010 he has also been a priest in Kirchdorf an der Amper .

Act

Among other things, Backhaus works on the Corpus Judaeo-Hellenisticum Novi Testamenti and on the revision of the standardized translation of the Bible. He is co-editor of the Evangelical-Catholic Commentary (EKK), the magazine for New Testament science and the customer of the older church (ZNW), the magazine for theology and church (ZThK) and von Herder's Biblical Studies (HBS).

The book of Acts is currently the main focus of his exegetical work . His other research interests include John the Baptist , the Letter to the Hebrews and the Revelation to John . In the area of ​​biblical hermeneutics, he focuses on the historical impact and the interdisciplinary references to art, literature, music and film.

Pope Francis appointed him on October 18, 2014 for a term of five years as a member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission . He is also a member of the advisory board of the Görres Society for the Care of Science and the “Theology” commission of the German Research Foundation, as well as theological advisor to the Faith Commission of the German Bishops' Conference .
