Kohlern ( Italian Colle ) is the highest settlement in the municipality of Bozen in South Tyrol and consists of the two districts Bauernkohlern ( ) and Herrenkohlern ( ). Historically, Kohlern belonged to the Malgrei Kampenn of the municipality of Zwölfmalgrei , today it is assigned to the Bolzano district center-Bozner Boden-Rentsch . Located on the northwestern foothills of the Regglberg between 1100 and 1200  m slm , the location - with Oberbozen am Ritten - was the classic summer retreat of the Bolzano patrician families in the fin de siècle and is now a popular destination.

Surname

The place name originally referred to a charcoal burner settlement , as charcoal was extracted here - thanks to the wealth of forests in the area - in premodern times for the needs of the Bolzano urban economy. The name is documented as early as 1270 with Conradus de Culle . In 1486 a fabric Koler zum Koler auff Monae , 1566 a Kholer zum Koler auf Manä is attested.

Attractions

A simple chapel was built in Bauernkohlern in 1879 by the Bozen city architect Sebastian Altmann . Here are also the Gasthof Klaus and the mountain hotel Kohlern guest farms . In terms of architectural history, the Villa Degischer (also Villa Bittner ) was built in the early 19th century by Johann Bittner in a historicizing style in peasant coal. The Uhlhof is used as a municipal training facility. A Waldorf school is also housed here. A 36 meter high observation tower made of larch wood offers a deep view of the Bolzano valley basin and opens up distant views of large parts of South Tyrol. The Schneiderwiesen above Bauernkohlern are a popular hiking destination.

A chapel was donated by Josef Franz Kager in Herrenkohlern in 1744. Its simple construction with a barrel-vaulted choir, a roof turret and square windows has a simple nave with a flat ceiling.

reachability

The settlement on the Kohlerer Berg, which was previously only accessible via difficult footpaths, has been connected to the Bolzano urban area via the Kohlerer cable car since 1908 . In the 1970s, a road that could be used by motor vehicles was also built, leading via Grafenhof and Bad St. Isidor to Bauern- and Herrenkohlern.
