Kojonup is a town in the Great Southern Region of Western Australia , which is 256 kilometers southeast of Perth and 152 kilometers north of Albany on the Albany Highway .

etymology

The word kojonup is believed to refer to a type of stone ax used by the local Aboriginal people .

history

In 1837 the land surveyor Alfred Hillman came to the area. He was the first European to explore the region. The Aborigines took him to the Kojonup spring . The place was a prominent stopover on the highway to Albany . In 1837 , a military base was established to protect travelers and the post.

Around 1845, the branch grew up to support the nearby barracks . Nowadays the barracks are in their original position. It is one of the oldest buildings in Western Australia. The first farms of Kojonup were built by soldiers. In the late 1860s, the military presence in Kojonup ended.

The city's first police station was built in 1869 and the first hotel license was issued in the same year.

Initially, the local economy relied on felling and transporting sandalwood and hunting for kangaroos . Around the mid-1800s, the wool industry grew . By 1906 the Shire had 10,500 sheep . By 1989 Kojonup had around a million sheep to be sheared.

Worth seeing

  • To illustrate the importance of the wool industry to the city's economy, a model of a wool wagon was built in 2001 to celebrate Australia Day.
  • The city has an 18-hole golf club, a skate park , a 50- meter swimming pool and an Australian football pitch
  • Another local attraction is Kodja Place , which has a rose labyrinth showing Kojonup's history.
