Komarov lilacs ( Syringa komarowii ) is a large shrub with purple pink to white flowers from the family of Olive Family (Oleaceae). The natural range is in the north of China. The species is used as an ornamental shrub.

description

Komarov's lilac is a 1.5 to 6 meter high shrub with thick, stemmed branches with numerous cork pores that are initially hairy and later bald. Terminal buds are present. The leaves have a 1 to 3 centimeter long stem. The leaf blade is simple, 5 to 19 centimeters long and 1.5 to 7, rarely also 9 centimeters wide, ovate-oblong to oblong-lanceolate, pointed to long and pointed and with a wedge-shaped base. The upper side of the leaf is deep green and glabrous or hairy along the median nerve , the underside is yellowish gray-green and scattered hairy.

The flowers grow in 4 to 25 centimeters long and 3 to 13 centimeters diameter, nodding or hanging, cylindrical to oblong-ovoid, dense or loose panicles . The inflorescence axis is densely hairy to bald. The flower stalks are 0 to 1.5 millimeters long and, like the 2 to 3 millimeter long calyx, densely hairy to bald. The corolla is 1 to 2.2 inches long, purple, red or pale purple on the outside and white on the inside. The corolla tube is 0.8 to 1.5, rarely 2 inches long and funnel-shaped. The corolla lobes are ovate to ovate-elongated, horizontal or upright. The anthers are yellow and sometimes a little outstanding.

When fruits are 1 to 1.5 centimeters long, smooth or with Korkporen occupied capsules formed.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 46.

distribution

The natural range is in China in the south of the Gansu province , in the west of Hubei , in the south of Shaanxi , in Sichuan and in the north of Yunnan . Komarov's lilac grows in cool, moist forests, thickets, along rivers and in ravines at an altitude of 1000 to 3400 meters on slightly acidic to alkaline, humus-rich or sandy-loamy, nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shaded locations. The species is usually frost hardy .

Systematics

Komarov Lilac ( Syringa komarowii ) is a kind of the genus of Lilac ( Syringa ) in the family of Oleaceae (Oleaceae). There she is assigned to the tribe Oleeae. The species was first scientifically described by Camillo Karl Schneider in 1910 . The genus name Syringa was chosen by Linnaeus in 1753, previously from around the 16th century the name was used both for the common lilac ( Syringa vulgaris ) and for the European pipe bush ( Philadelphus coronarius ). It can probably be derived from the Greek "syrigs", a wind instrument that can be made from the branches of the pipe bush. The specific epithet komarowii is reminiscent of the Russian botanist Wladimir Leontjewitsch Komarow .

There are two subspecies:

  • Syringa komarowii subsp. komarowii with mostly more or less dense inflorescences, on the outside dark-colored, purple-red, red or lilac-red corolla and usually more or less upright corolla lobes. The subspecies blooms from May to July, the fruits ripen from July to October. The distribution area is in thickets, forests and along rivers in 1000 to 3400 meters altitude in the south of Gansu and Shaanxi, in Sichuan and in the north of Yunnan. It is assigned to winter hardiness zone 6a with mean annual minimum temperatures of −23.3 to −20.6 ° C.
  • The arched lilac ( Syringa komarowii subsp. Reflexa (CK Schneider) PS Green & MC Chang ) with pyramidal, often interrupted inflorescences, pale colored, light red or pale purple corolla and mostly horizontal corolla lobes. The subspecies blooms from May to June, the fruits ripen from July to October. The distribution area lies in gorges at 1,800 to 2,900 meters above sea level in the wasteland of Hubei and northeast of Sichuan. The taxon was described by Camillo Karl Schneider in 1910 as a separate species Syringa reflexa and classified as a subspecies Syringa komarowii in 1995 . It is assigned to winter hardiness zone 4 with mean annual minimum temperatures of −34.4 to −28.9 ° C.

use

Komarov's lilac is seldom used as an ornamental shrub , the arched lilac (the subspecies Syringa komarowii subsp. Reflexa ) is often used because of its decorative flowers .
