Konrad Hubert

Konrad Hubert (also Pulbarbus (nickname), Ornipogonis (nickname), Konrad Huber , Konrad Huober , Konrad Humbert ; * 1507 in Bergzabern ; † April 13, 1577 in Strasbourg ) was a Reformed theologian, hymn poet and reformer.

Life

Hubert attended school in Heidelberg from 1519 . From 1526 he studied in Basel and was won over to the gospel here. Johannes Oekolampad's templates gave him a lot, but he could learn even more as his famulus . The stay in the house of this scholar gave him numerous personal relationships, which he cultivated in his correspondence.

When after the battle of Kappel am Albis there were no new opportunities, Oecolampad recommended him to his friend Martin Bucer , who was very impressed by Hubert's "friendly and good manner" and accepted him as his helper in Strasbourg at St. Thomas. He filled this office for 18 years with the greatest loyalty . His humility was so great that he never sought influence. For Bucer he was an invaluable helper who tried to carry out and facilitate the extensive work of the busy and often traveling President of the Church Convention.

He had to write numerous documents and execute drafts precisely. Theologically he was entirely on Bucer's side and tried to keep the center in mildness and indulgence. After Bucer's departure in 1549 by Johannes Marbach , he could not get along with the Lutheran tendency that had come to power. In 1557 he was expelled from the church convention and in 1563 dismissed from his position as an assistant to St. Thomas.

Since then he has only been able to hold services occasionally as a “free preacher”. Even when he wanted to publish Bucer's writings, he found much opposition. In the preface to "Tomus Anglicanus" he spoke about his relationship with Bucer. He withdrew more and more from church life. His literary work, his loyalty to the Strasbourg art, but also his songs do not allow him to be forgotten.
