Life

Under Constantine in 1755, after the death of Christian von Hessen-Wanfried ( Eschwege ), the region of Hessen-Wanfried fell back to the Hessen-Rotenburg line. The Rotenburger Quart , which had been divided since 1648, was now in one hand again and remained undivided in the future after the Primogenitur implemented in 1754 .

In 1759 he was accepted into the Order of the Golden Fleece . He was a member of the Freemasons Association ; The Constantin Lodge for the Three Wreaths , founded in Rotenburg an der Fulda in the 18th century, was named after him.

In the years 1767–1769, Constantine had the Palais Hessen-Rotenburg built by the architect Christoph Philipp Diede as a city residence in Kassel .

family

Constantine was the son of Landgrave Ernst II. Leopold von Hessen-Rotenburg and his wife Eleonore Maria Anna von Löwenstein-Wertheim .

Constantine married his cousin Countess Marie Eva Sophie von Starhemberg , widow of Prince Wilhelm von Nassau-Siegen , in 1745 . After her death in 1773, he married the French count's daughter Johanna Henriette von Bombelles (born October 22, 1751 in Bitche ; † November 28, 1822 in Ancy-le-Frame) at the castle in Wildeck in 1775 . She carried the title of Countess von Reichenberg, authorized by the Kaiser.

The first child from his first marriage, Karl Emanuel , became his heir and successor. Another offspring among a total of 11 children was the well-known Carl Constantin von Hessen-Rotenburg or "Citoyen Hesse", a general in the French army.
