Kosmatsch (Ukrainian and Russian Космач , Polish Kosmacz ) is a village in western Ukraine about 20 kilometers west of the Rajon capital Kosiv on the Pistynka River ( Пістинька ). Due to its scattered settlements, it is the largest village in Ukraine in terms of area.
The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1412 and was in the Austrian crown land of Galicia (most recently in the Kosów district ), then from 1918 to 1939 in the Second Polish Republic ( Stanislau , Powiat Kołomyja , Gmina Kosmacz ) and from 1939/1945 as Part of the Soviet Union within the Ukrainian SSR and, since 1991, the Ukraine.
In 1940 it was given the status of an urban-type settlement , but this was revoked in the 1950s, and since then the place has been a simple village.
On September 13, 2016, the village became the center of the newly founded rural community Kosmatsch ( Космацька сільська громада Kosmazka silska hromada ), which also includes the 2 villages Brusturiw (Брустурів) and Prokurawa , until then it was the district council of the same name .
