Kothe is a German family name .

History and meaning

So-called Kötner have been among the original settlers since 1300 , as successors to the Höfner family . The Höfner ran agricultural farms, those of feudal lordshow nobility, churches or monasteries were given as fiefs. These farms, the fields of which were more or less distributed around the farm, formed the oldest part of the villages. By separating smaller courtyard parts from the full courtyards, the "droppings" were created. In inheritance registers it is noted that “house and field” are part of the farm (Höfners), while “Kote” (the Kötner) says: “He owns the house”. Since these “kots” are almost always close to the older farms, it can be assumed that children who were born later were given a “house place” and some land from the farm. Extensive partitions of the "Vollhöfe" took place shortly after the Thirty Years' Warinstead and were the result of excessive taxes on the feudal lords. This created the "half" and "quarter courtyards" as well as many "koten" (smaller courtyards). The name Kothe is derived from the word "Kote ( Kate = small house) or" Kotstelle "(property) and thus points to ancestors from rural areas.
