history

Paltrock windmill Oppelhain

The Oppelhain municipal council began preparing for this project back in 1994. On September 23, 1996, the herb garden was officially opened by the then Prime Minister of the State of Brandenburg - Manfred Stolpe .

Through the initiative of the community representatives, in cooperation with the responsible persons of the Elsterland office and the nature park administration, the recording and archiving of the native natural and aromatic herbs was started. This resulted in a herbal primer in 1998, which describes the places where they occur in the Niederlausitz heathland and how the individual herbs work.

construction

The aim was to present the native plant species to the visitors in a park . A rock garden on a hill, a herb chessboard, a herb snail , a cottage garden and a heather garden were laid out on an area of around 4,000 square meters in the immediate vicinity of the Oppelhain Paltrock windmill . A pond was created in the center of the garden, in which there are yellow beetles , pond frogs and various fish such as goldfish , rudd and moderlieschen .

Four different models on a scale of 1:10 of typical types of mills in the region were later set up. In 2001 a bird watch followed, on which native bird species can be seen. Later, more raised beds were created and the variety of plants was constantly expanded.

plants

At the inauguration, around 60 different plants were on display, the herb garden currently has around 339. In the meantime, it is no longer just native wild, medicinal and aromatic herbs that are presented to visitors here, but plants from all over the world that can withstand our climate. Numerous Bible plants are currently growing here , including real aloe , myrtle and papyrus , rarities such as the wollemi pine , a sequoia and the titan arum , as well as other large and small plants.

Function / meaning

The herb garden is not only an end in itself, but species conservation is pursued in a targeted manner. These plants are called "conservation varieties" in the technical jargon . More of these so-called conservation species are added each year, which also affects the number of visitors, which is constantly increasing. In 2001 there were fifteen registered tours with around 380 visitors. In 2008, 1,000 visitors were already guided through the herb garden. However, the exact number of the numerous unregistered visitors is not known. During the guided tours, the visitors are informed about the effects, the locations and the care of the individual plants .

A visit to the herb garden has become a popular destination for senior citizens from the region. Since then, many were students and teachers from the nearby school camp "Täubertsmühle Friedersdorf" as well as from the summer camp Rückersdorf. Visitors can also get expert advice from the Bad Liebenwerda tourist office , the Maasdorf local history association and the Elsterwerda tourist office in the Oppelhain herb garden.

Every year a summer tour of the Lausitzer Rundschau is firmly planned.
