Art blacksmith Wilfried Schwuchow

Life

Wilfried Schwuchow came to the Uckermark with his family as a refugee child . Even in his youth he had a pronounced artistic streak, especially in the field of painting . He first painted landscapes and portraits in oil.

Foundation stone laid at Greiffenberger Mühle

Schwuchow never attended art school, so everything taught himself to be self- taught. After he had turned away from painting due to lack of success, his pursuit turned to manual activities, in particular metal construction . He acquired a master's degree as a blacksmith and created many pieces that are visible and known far across the country. He has carried out work on around 143 churches in Berlin , Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (as of March 2018). He repairs tower clocks , restores or builds tower crowns according to old templates, makes guild signs and especially likes oversized mechanical clocks. His motto is: "I want to make it clear how time is constantly running out."

Every year, Wilfried Schwuchow takes part in the International Crafts Fair in Munich with some works and ultimately receives many orders. However, he works alone and his workshop, in which there are many machines, hardly offers any space.

Familiar

Wilfried Schwuchow is married to Eva-Maria. He suffered a stroke in 2017 from which he has largely recovered physically.

  • 2017: A sundial from the Erkner housing association (WGE) had to be removed during renovation work on a house on the church forecourt. Schwuchow has agreed with the WGE on a conversion and a new location: The digits came to earth, were moved further apart and the shadow stick was omitted. Instead, visitors have to stand in the middle of the large sundial and use its shadow to show the time. The location of this curiosity is the Erkner children's farm.
  • 2017: When Antje Mittenzwei, the managing director of the housing and construction company mbH (Barnim) from Bernau near Berlin , saw this sundial, she also commissioned a sundial for the company’s headquarters. Schwuchow did not just want to copy his invention , but promised: "I will make your city coat of arms into a clock, the largest of its kind in the world." So he constructed a 15 meter high sundial with a moving bear (which is the Bernau heraldic animal) in the center . The work is finished, but it is still in the metal artist's garden. The reason: The Bernauer Monument Protection has concerns about the installation of this interesting work in the center of the small town, although several locations have already been selected that are owned by the construction company. At the beginning of April 2018 there was still no decision, so the managing director fiercely let it be known: "We will get the watch to Bernau - on principle."
  • since 2016: Schwuchow is working on a one meter high Fabergé egg into which a miniature of the Berlin World Peace Bell and a clock are incorporated. This new work of art is supposed to be a gift for Russian President Vladimir Putin . Schwuchow has already come to an understanding with the Russian ambassador in Germany.
The blacksmith formulates his intention as follows: “I want to remind the Kremlin boss of the peace in the world at any hour.” Instead of money from Russia, he would be happy about some gold for his workshop.
