The power plant Liddell ( English Liddell Power Station ) is a coal power plant in New South Wales , Australia . It is about 100 kilometers northwest of Newcastle between the towns of Muswellbrook and Singleton in the Hunter Valley in an area with many coal mines . The power plant is owned by AGL Energy also operated and used by AGL Energy. In April 2015, AGL announced that Liddell would be shut down in 2022.
The power plant is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Liddell , which was built as a cooling water reservoir . The water comes from the Hunter River . Together with the Bayswater power station one kilometer away , the Liddell power station produces around 30% of New South Wales' energy needs.
Data
With an installed capacity of 2 GW , Liddell is one of the most powerful power plants in Australia. Annual generation fluctuates: in 2003 it was 8.969 billion kWh and in 2008 it was 11.135 billion kWh. The consumption of hard coal varies accordingly: in 2003 it was 4.47 million t and in 2008 it was 5.58 million t. Liddell serves to cover the base load .
Power plant units
The power plant consists of a total of four units that went into operation from 1971 to 1973. The following table gives an overview:
block | Max. Power (MW) | Start of operation | turbine | generator | Steam boiler |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | 500 | 1971 | GE | GE | CE |
2 | 500 | 1972 | GE | GE | CE |
3 | 500 | 1972 | GE | GE | CE |
4th | 500 | 1973 | GE | GE | CE |
The maximum output of the four blocks was originally 500 MW each; In 2017, AGL announced that due to the age of the turbines, the output was only 420 MW each.
