development

In March 2013, the port of Eckernförde was partially closed due to the inability to use essential parts of the infrastructure. After the responsibility had changed and there was a lack of qualification for the maintenance of ports in the area of the new responsibility, maintenance measures were missing for years, so that the fleet command blocked the Eckernförde port.

On August 31, 2013, when responsibilities had been clarified after months of wrangling, an investment of 145 million euros up to 2019 was announced. Furthermore, the 700 people of the naval protection forces are to move from the Preuss barracks to the base by 2017 . This requires the timely completion of the quarters and infrastructure, the costs of which are included in the investment amount mentioned.

In January 2014, the first woman in the Bundeswehr started her service on the bridge of a submarine in Eckernförde.

On July 16, 2014, Federal Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen visited the site and, in view of the ailing condition of the accommodations, announced that the investment backlog should be resolved by the end of the year.

During a renewed visit by Federal Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen with her Norwegian counterpart Ine Marie Eriksen Søreide on August 22, 2017, she announced that the base, which at that time had around 3,000 posts, would grow by around 400 posts. As a result, the Preusser barracks should continue to be used. In the coming years, another 260 million euros should be invested in the expansion and renovation of the base.

In addition, the German submarine fleet, which currently comprises six boats, is to be expanded by another two ships. Of an order for six identical submarines at the ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems shipyard , four are to be built for Norway and two for Germany in the mid-2020s.
