Kraut was a New York hardcore band from Manhattan that formed in 1981 and broke up in 1986.

history

The band was founded in 1981 and consisted of the singer Davy Gunner (15 years old), the guitarist Doug Holland (18), the bassist Don Cowan (22) and the drummer John Koncz aka "Johnny Feedback" (13). Since twice as many tickets were sold for The Clash for the only appearance in the USA than was actually planned, the number of concerts had to be doubled, although an opening act was still missing for this second concert. Then Kraut played on June 11, 1981 as the opening act for The Clash, her first appearance after Kraut had sent the management a demo that included three songs and was specially recorded for this. The band then recorded their first single, Kill for Cash, in August 1981 , which had a circulation of 1,000. A second single followed in December under the name Unemployed and had a circulation of 5,000 copies. The song Getaway , which was to be heard for the first time on the Reach-Out International Records sampler Abortion and later on the debut album , was also created during the recordings . As another song also was Matinee added that the radio program only once Noise the Show by Tim Sommer on WNYU-FM was heard. More appearances followed, with Kraut playing with TSOL and The Professionals at the Channel Club in Boston in June 1982 . The group quickly made friends with The Professionals. Kraut was then present at a performance by The Professionals at the New York Club Ritz. The Professional then flew back to England , except for Steve Jones , who stayed in New York for a few days. Thereupon he met the Kraut guitarist Doug Holland, who invited Jones to the recordings of the debut album An Adjustment to Society , which was released in 1982 and of which about 10,000 units are separated. Jones could be heard as a guest musician in the songs Onward , Sell Out and Kill for Cash .

The publication was followed by appearances in the A7 , CBGB , Mudd Club and the Great Gildersleeves. The band played with groups like Bad Brains , The Abused , Gilligan's Revenge and Urban Waste . Jones also lived with Holland and bassist Dan Cowan for some time, which is why he was able to occasionally perform live with the group. In the summer of 1983, the band held a tour of the United States before recording a music video for the song All Twisted in December , which was also broadcast on MTV . In the following ten months, other appearances followed, as well as various recordings of new songs, from which the second album Whetting the Scythe came about, which was released in 1984. After a tour of California in January 1985, another tour of the western United States followed with Channel 3 . In April 1985, Doug Holland left the band to join Cro-Mags . As a replacement came Chris Smith from Battalion of Saints to the cast. This was followed by appearances in the CBGB, Pyramid and Danceteria. In the summer of 1985 Smith played the guitar tracks of four new songs that had been composed by Holland. The rest of the year the band worked on new songs. Smith died in an accident on February 8, 1986 in which he slipped in the bathtub, hit his head and drowned in the tub. Then the band broke up. In 1992, Century Media re-released both Kraut albums. In 1991 the band played a gig at the Ritz and on June 21 and 22, 2002 at the CBGB to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Reach-Out International Records sampler New York Thrash .
