The Fürstenwalde – Beeskow district railway - the "Scharmützelseebahn" - was owned by the former Beeskow-Storkow district in the Prussian province of Brandenburg. The route of this former circular railway is only operated from the former district town of Fürstenwalde / Spree to the train station Klinikum in the spa town of Bad Saarow.

history

From June 3, 1911, the route led from Fürstenwalde - located on the Berlin – Frankfurt (Oder) state railway - after crossing the Oder-Spree Canal in a southerly direction to the Scharmützelsee . It initially ended in Bad Saarow-Pieskow , but was extended on December 20, 1911 in a south-easterly direction to the district town of Beeskow on the Frankfurt (Oder) –Königs Wusterhausen railway line . The normal-gauge small railway line was 33 kilometers long.

At the same time a branch line had been opened, which followed from Petersdorf on the west bank of the Scharmützelsee to Saarow West. From there it went on from May 1, 1921 to Silberberg Waldschänke . This eight-kilometer branch line, which was primarily used for tourist purposes, was destroyed in January 1945 and was not reopened.

The provincial association of the Province of Brandenburg was responsible for the management of the railway. When operations began, there were four three-axle steam locomotives from Orenstein & Koppel , as well as six passenger cars, two baggage / mail cars and twelve freight cars.

Passenger traffic started well, in 1914 205,834 people were carried. Freight traffic was rather low: in 1914, 22,368 t of goods were transported. The 1914 timetable provided for four pairs of trains over the entire route and four pairs of trains between Fürstenwalde and Pieskow on weekdays, with two pairs of trains from Fürstenwalde going to Saarow West.

After the Second World War , the power of disposal over the railway passed from the district to the country; Like all railways operated by the Brandenburg State Transport Authority until then, it was incorporated into the administration of the Deutsche Reichsbahn in 1949 .

Independent of the circular path, the Beeskow-Storkow district had maintained a motor transport system as a further in -house operation since October 1, 1928 . Its three bus routes ran partially parallel to the circular path.

Between 1959 and 1963 the train service was stopped because of the poor state of the superstructure.

On December 31, 1993, freight traffic on the route was stopped. In 1994 the Pfaffendorf, Wilmersdorf and Beeskow Nord stations were closed. After the range of passenger services had been limited to around five or six pairs of trains a day for decades, a continuous two-hour service was introduced in 1995. However, the condition of the track deteriorated over time, so that the pace could no longer be adhered to. That is why, from 1997, the Pfaffendorf – Beeskow section was used as a replacement rail service with buses, only the first train of the day and the last train to Beeskow drove through.

A year later, the entire route was closed and only buses drove. In October 1999 the Fürstenwalde – Bad Saarow-Pieskow section was reopened after renovation. Since then, this section has been driven every hour. Although the renovation of the remaining Bad Saarow-Pieskow-Beeskow section was initially announced, the state of Brandenburg announced in 2006 that the federal government would not reopen it as a result of the federal government's cut in regionalization funds. The rail replacement service on this section has been replaced by regular buses.

Current condition

Since the renovation of the Fürstenwalde - Bad Saarow-Pieskow section, the trains have initially been operated by DB Regio . Between December 9, 2007 and December 13, 2014, the East German Railway took over passenger traffic on this line. The Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn has been responsible for operational management on the line since December 14, 2014 . Regio-Shuttle vehicles have been in use since 2007 .

On April 18, 2008, DB Netz put out the Bad Saarow-Pieskow - Beeskow section for takeover by a third party. Alternatively, this section should be shut down. The shareholders of the Erlebnisbahn GmbH & Co. KG (operator of the Zossen - Jüterbog adventure railway, which is used by draisines) took over the route with the Scharmützelseebahn GmbH, which they founded for this purpose.

On a 1,100 meter long section of the section taken over by Scharmützelseebahn GmbH - from Bad Saarow to the new Bad Saarow Klinikum stop built by the aforementioned company - passenger traffic has been taking place again since October 21, 2011.

The Scharmützelseebahn tendered the remaining section of the Bad Saarow-Pieskow Süd - Beeskow route again in November 2010 for takeover by other railway infrastructure companies . At the same time, the dismantling of the rails on this section of the route began in early 2011, although this section was still considered a railway line at that time. The company stated that it had planned tourist traffic there, but it would not have been profitable. The German regional railway, which was unsuccessful in the 2008 tender , accused the company of “cherry picking”. After there were protests against the unauthorized dismantling of the track from the state of Brandenburg, it was initially stopped.

In the northern section, further modernization work was carried out in 2016, including the construction of a new bridge in Fürstenwalde. The shortened travel times could also make it possible to expand operations to the Pieskow district again without the need for additional vehicle circulation.

The reactivation from the current end point Bad Saarow Klinikum to Bad Saarow Süd should Template: future / in 2 yearstake place by December 2022 . To this end, the 1.3 kilometer line to the new Bad Saarow Süd stop on Bahnhofstrasse is to be rebuilt.

The remainder of the route from Bad Saarow Süd to Beeskow has been released ( de- dedicated) from railway operations in accordance with Section 23 AEG . A reactivation of the southern section is not in prospect.
