history

The Angerdorf Groß Rietz was first mentioned in 1346 as a church village in the Meissen diocese articles under the name Ryetz . The place name is derived from the Lower Sorbian word "rěcka", which means something like "Bach" or " Fließ ". Since 1468 the place name has had the addition of large , which serves to distinguish it from the nearby villages of Rietz-Neuendorf, Klein Rietz and Wendisch Rietz .

Landmarks of the village are the Groß Rietz castle and the village church, which are located in the center of the village on or south of the village green. The church was built in 1704, although the square west tower was not added until 1791. The baroque palace built at the end of the 17th century was badly damaged during the Second World War , and it was only possible to restore it completely after the fall of the Wall .

On January 1, 1928, the municipality of Rietz-Neuendorf, and on January 1, 1938, the municipality of Klein Rietz was incorporated. Both communities became independent again after the Second World War, the community of Groß Rietz was initially in the Soviet occupation zone and then in the GDR . On July 1, 1950, Klein Rietz was again incorporated into Groß Rietz, while Rietz-Neuendorf was part of the municipality of Görzig. During the district reform carried out in the GDR on July 25, 1952, the community of Groß Rietz was incorporated into the Beeskow district in the Frankfurt (Oder) district. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Beeskow district was renamed the Beeskow district , and for the district reform in December 1993, the Beeskow district was merged with two other districts to form the new Oder-Spree district . Groß Rietz belonged to the Glienicke / Rietz-Neuendorf office . On December 31, 2001, Groß Rietz and ten other municipalities were merged to form the new municipality of Rietz-Neuendorf . On October 26, 2003 the Glienicke / Rietz-Neuendorf office was dissolved, and the place has been vacant since then.
