Kreisch ( Romanian Criș , Hungarian Keresd ) is a village in Mureș County ( Romania ). It belongs to the municipality of Daneș (Dunesdorf) .

location

Bethlen Castle in Criș

Kreisch is located roughly in the middle of Transylvania , in a southern side valley of the Târnava Mare (Great Kokel) . The closest city is Sighișoara ( Schäßburg ; about 12 km northeast).

history

Kreisch was first mentioned in a document in 1305. At that time it belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and was founded by the Hungarian noble Bethlen family. For several centuries, the majority of the residents of Transylvania were Saxons who called the place Kreisch . Unlike many other villages in the area, Kreisch was not on Königsboden , but was owned by the nobility and its inhabitants were therefore servants .

After Kreisch belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary , the Principality of Transylvania and Austria-Hungary until the end of the First World War , it has been part of the state of Romania since then.

population

In 1788 there were 866 inhabitants. Since the 19th century, the Transylvanian Saxons made up the relative, sometimes the absolute majority of the village population in censuses. In 1941 the largest number of inhabitants was registered with 1459; slightly more than 50 percent of them described themselves as Germans . From the end of the Second World War, most of the residents were Romanians . Most Germans emigrated after the revolution of 1989. As a result, the population of Kreisch decreased significantly.

In 2002 there were still 627 people living in Kreisch, 410 Romanians, 39 German, 153 Roma and 25 Hungarians .

traffic

Kreisch lies on a partially paved driveway that leads south from Daneș. Public transport doesn't touch the place.

The nearest train station is about 10 km north of Kreisch in Daneş on the Teiuş – Braşov railway line .

Attractions

In the village there is a renaissance castle of the Bethlen family, which was built in several stages from around 1340 to the 18th century. In 1948 the castle was expropriated by the Romanian state and then fell into disrepair. Several attempts at restoration were given up after a short time for financial reasons. In 2007 the Bethlen family got the castle back and tried to make the building habitable again. The property is a listed building.

The historic Protestant church was torn down at the beginning of the 20th century and replaced by a new building.
