War memorial on Schloßstraße (Ismaning)
The listed war memorial on Schloßstraße in Ismaning ( Upper Bavaria ) is an approximately two meter high stone sculpture (file number D-1-84-130-11). It shows two lions walking upright on a stone cuboid and one wounded lying on the ground next to them. The memorial initially commemorated the 100 men from the Ismaning community who died in the First World War . It was inaugurated on May 24, 1924, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the local veterans and warriors association.
The design for the sculpture was made by Richard Riemerschmid , then director of the Munich School of Applied Arts , the model by the sculptor Wilhelm Nida-Rümelin . The stone work was done by R. Gschwender.
Originally, a ring of iron spears surrounded the monument. At the decision of Mayor Erich Zeitler , these were replaced after the end of the Second World War by stone tablets on which the names of the 181 fallen and 89 missing from the war are engraved.
Every year, on the day of national mourning , a memorial event for the victims of the two world wars takes place at the sculpture.
