Education and professional career

Krzysztof Grzegorek studied medicine at the Łódź Medical Academy until 1986 and then started working at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Health Care Facility in Skarżysko-Kamienna (Zespół Opieki Zdrowotnej w Skarżysku-Kamiennej) . In 1990 he obtained his first specialization in obstetrics and gynecology. From 1991 to 1995 he was the chief physician of the Skarżysko-Kamienna Municipal Hospital and obtained the second degree of specialization in obstetrics and gynecology in 1993 and a year later the degree of doctor of medicine at the Jagiellonian University . From 1995 to 1998 he was the medical director of the health care facility in Skarżysko-Kamienna and from 1998 head of the obstetrics and gynecology department at the Skarżysko-Kamienna Municipal Hospital.

Political career

During his studies he belonged to the independent student association and, since 1989, to Solidarność . In 1993 he stood in the parliamentary elections as a candidate for a mandate in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland on the list of Bezpartyjny Blok Wspierania Reform (BBWR), but could not win a mandate.

In 2001 he joined the Platforma Obywatelska (PO). In the 2004 European elections , he ran for the party in constituency no. 10 for a mandate in the European Parliament in third place on the list. With 17,231 of the valid votes cast, he received the third most votes on the list, but this was not enough for a seat in the EU Parliament, as the PO only won two of eight seats in the constituency.

In the following year he ran successfully in the parliamentary elections in constituency No. 33 for a mandate in the Sejm of the Republic of Poland; he received 8,730 (2.39%) of the valid votes cast. Throughout the V. legislature he was a member of the health committee.

In the early parliamentary elections on October 21, 2007 , he ran for re-election in the same constituency and was able to increase his share of the vote with 18,874 (3.91%) of the valid votes cast and secure a seat in the Sejm again. After Bogdan Klich was appointed Minister of Defense on November 15, 2007 and resigned his mandate in the European Parliament, Grzegorek would have accepted the mandate as a successor. But he renounced the EU mandate and was appointed State Secretary in the Ministry of Health on November 21, 2007 .

Corruption affair

In the course of researching and investigating the corruption scandal surrounding Johnson & Johnson in Poland, Grzegorek was also accused by the Polish television broadcaster TVN of accepting bribes of PLN 20,000 during his time in Skarżysko-Kamienna. On June 2, 2008, although he denied the allegations, he resigned as State Secretary, gave up his political immunity and resigned from the party and the PO faction in the Sejm.

In April 2009, his criminal case began in the Skarżysko-Kamienna District Court. At the beginning of November 2009, he was sentenced in the first instance to one year and ten months' imprisonment , a fine and a four-year ban on performing managerial duties in health care facilities. In January 2011, the Kielce District Court upheld the judgment.

After working at the Ujastek Maternity and Women's Clinic in Kraków (2012–2013) and at the Pińczów Hospital (2013–2015), Grzegorek has been working again as the Deputy Medical Director at the Skarżysko-Kamienna Hospital since May 13, 2015.
