Książ Wielki is a village in the powiat Miechowski of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the rural community of the same name with around 5150 inhabitants.

Książ Wielki is located approx. 45 km northeast of Kraków on the national road DK 7 .

history

The first written mention of Książ Wielki comes from the year 1120. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries it is said to have existed as a wooden fortification that was destroyed several times. At the end of the fourteenth century Książ Wielki received city rights under Magdeburg law. In 1556, as part of the Reformation, a synod was held on the merger of the Polish and Lithuanian Calvinists . The castle was built in 1595. The village was largely destroyed twice, in 1655 by Swedish troops during the Second Northern War and in 1702 during a flood. After the January uprising , Książ Wielki lost its town charter in 1869. On September 6, 1939, the village was occupied by German troops and taken by the Red Army on January 14, 1944 .

In 1949 the high school ( Liceum ogólnokształcące ) was established in the castle.

From 1975 to 1998 the village belonged to the Kielce Voivodeship .
