Kuçova ( Albanian  also  Kuçovë ) is an industrial city in central Albania . The city has 12,654 inhabitants (2011 census). The place is on the edge of the Myzeqe plain in central Albania about ten kilometers north of Berat  and 125 kilometers south of Tirana .

local community

Kuçova is the capital of a municipality ( bashkia ) with 31,262 inhabitants (2011). The municipality ( komuna ) Kozara, Lumas and Perond, which were independent until 2015, also belong to the municipality . The area includes the former Kuçova County and Lumas Municipality, which was part of Berat County .

history

Kuçova is the center of the Albanian oil industry, which has been produced in the region since 1928. As one of the most important industrial locations in the country, Kuçova was also the scene of the first workers' strike in Albania in 1936 . The city did not develop until the 1950s with Soviet help, which is why it was named Qyteti Stalin ( German  Stalin City ) on July 10, 1951 . The small village of Kuçova, which preceded the planned city at this point, was first mentioned in 1689. A statue of Stalin erected in December 19, 1950 adorned the city center for a long time. As the location of a military airfield , the city was closed to foreigners. The airport, which also has large caverns , is still used by the Albanian Air Force and has been modernized for this purpose. The industrial city, characterized by real socialist architecture , was a symbol of the industrial progress of the country. The population rose from 6400 inhabitants in 1938 to 32,000 people in 1980. On January 5, 1991, the place was renamed. After the end of real socialism in Albania, Kuçova became impoverished and run down. Factories, power stations, and many oil wells stand still.

Attractions

In the shadow of Berat, which is rich in sights, Kuçova is not only able to offer something to those visitors who are interested in (communist) urban planning . After all, the city can be easily reached by public transport from Berat and has a rare early basilica with a wooden roof from the 10th century , the Nikolaus Church ( Shën Kolli ), two kilometers outside in Perondi . This oldest type of church building in Albania has been completely preserved here and is suitable for comparison with the later domed buildings in Berat. You can also see the only bell tower in the country attached to a Byzantine church. It probably dates from the 13th century.
