Kuhalm (Gurktal Alps)

The Kuhalm is an alpine region with 1784  m above sea level. A. high summit in the Metnitz Mountains of the Gurktal Alps , on the border between Carinthia and Styria .

Location and landscape

The Kuhalm rises between St. Lambrecht in a side valley on the Neumarkter Sattel , Laßnitz near Murau in the next side valley in the upper Murtal , and the Metnitztal in northern Carinthia. Six kilometers east of the Kuhalm is the Grebenzen , a north-south oriented limestone stock with several elevations up to 1892  m . To the west lies the Kuchalm  ( 1765  m ) after the saddle at the Priewaldkreuz (approx.  1352  m ) , with the summit of the Mittagskogel  ( 1577  m ) directly above the saddle.

To the north, the Sommerauenbach flows over the Thajabach to the Mur . The western flank drains to the Priewaldbach, which as one of the two source rivers of the Laßnitzbach also flows into the Mur. The Roßbach goes south to the Metnitz and the Gurk . The Mur and Gurk are tributaries of the Drava .

Development and tours

The mountain is easily accessible from all sides. From St. Lambrecht a marked path leads from the suburb through the Unteralpe or the Buchwald up. Otherwise, the summit can also be reached from the Laßnitzer and Metnitztaler sides (from Ingolsthal) on numerous forest paths.

The first wind farm in Carinthia is being planned on the neighboring Kuchalm . There was also a measuring wind turbine there for several years. No expansion is planned on the Kuhalm itself: Although the mountain is no longer part of the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen Nature Park , it would still disrupt the landscape. On the Styrian side, no wind energy planning zone is planned, and according to the Carinthian Wind Farm Ordinance 2013, the summit is too transparent.
