In Styria there are (as of 2015) ten wind farms and individual larger wind turbines, with a total of over 60 systems. They have a total nominal output of a good 120 MW, about the output of the disused coal-fired power station Zeltweg . The current standard energy capacity is unknown; at the expansion stage of 50 MW (2007) around 100 G Wh of electrical energy were produced annually. Styria ranks well behind Lower Austria (2013: 400 systems / 700 MW) and Burgenland (2013: 270 systems / 550 MW) in terms of both the number of installed systems and wind power output (2013: 40 systems / 70 MW) three in Austria. Overall, however, only around 1% of the demand in Styria is produced in the form of wind energy, while small hydropower plants alone , which are traditionally well represented here, produce 20 times as much.
The realizable potential is only a quarter to a half of the (much smaller) Burgenland and about a tenth of Lower Austria, depending on the scenario of the profitability of less than optimal locations. In fact, the favorable areas are located on the high altitudes of the alpine mountain ridges on both sides of the Mur – Mürzfurche, which represent only 10% of the land area, and represent significant environmental protection areas over large areas, so that overall only a few areas that can be expanded.
Special features in Styria are the consistently alpine altitudes of the locations (in Lower Austria and Burgenland primarily the plains are expanded, while in Upper Austria, locations above 1600 m are principally excluded zones). Also noteworthy are the high proportion of local initiatives, as well as Austria's first wind power plant for the self-sufficient supply of a ski area ( Salzstiegl – Speikkogel wind park ) or the Moschkogel demonstration and research facility .
Development program for the field of wind energy
As early as 2002, on behalf of the Province of Styria, the LandesEnergieVerein identified areas suitable for wind energy use. 28 areas were identified, a quarter of which had been developed by the end of the 2000s.
According to estimates, the capacity installed by the end of the 2000s could be doubled or tripled. In 2013, the state government issued a development program for the field of wind energy (Sapro Windenergie) , which is intended to promote the "spatially compatible expansion of wind energy" in line with the objectives of the Styrian Energy Strategy 2025 (2009), but the "objectives and principles of nature and landscape protection , spatial planning and the preservation of undamaged, near-natural areas and landscapes within the meaning of the Alpine Convention ”. The following zone groups were defined:
- Priority zones in which the construction of wind turbines is to be concentrated: "Areas with good wind suitability and good infrastructural prerequisites (access, energy dissipation etc.), in which the construction of wind turbines is to be concentrated on a larger scale." Sizes of over 20 MW are possible .
- Suitability zones, which complement the priority zones: They are selected in the order of magnitude so that “at least five wind turbines with a total nominal output of at least 10 MW can be built.”
- Exclusion zones in which the construction of wind turbines is not permitted. The exclusion zones largely correspond to the significant environmental protection areas .
This created uniform criteria for locations across the region.
