The Kurt-Bürger-Stadion is a football stadium with an athletics facility in Wismar , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The facility is named after the politician Kurt Bürger , Mecklenburg's Prime Minister who died in 1951 .

history

In 1949, VEB Projektierung Schwerin began planning the sports facility at the request of the directorate of the Mathias Thesen shipyard in Wismar . Mainly thanks to the voluntary work of employees of the company and members of various clubs in the Hanseatic city, the first section of the new stadium was released on April 30, 1950 on the occasion of a friendly game between ZSG Anker Wismar and Eimsbütteler TV .

However, another two and a half years should pass before the final completion. The stadium was officially inaugurated on September 21, 1952 in front of 16,000 visitors. In addition to a soccer match between BSG Motor Wismar and BSG Chemie Leipzig , athletes competitions, boxing matches and gymnastics demonstrations took place. The celebrations were framed with fireworks.

The Ostsee-Zeitung later wrote that the government of the German Democratic Republic had made a total of 2.3 million DM investment funds available for the construction . In addition, it was planned to increase the capacity through additional standing terraces to 20,000 spectator seats.

The main users of the new sports facility were initially primarily the footballers from Motor Wismar, who played their league games here. Initially it was also planned to play in the provisional stadium during the construction phase. Since Jahnplatz , the actual home ground, was temporarily closed due to the weather, the Wismarans tried to make the new area suitable for games. At the political level, however, it was decided that the BSG had to host their top division home games in the Rostock Volksstadion instead .

In 1960, important scenes from the DEFA film Der neue Fimmel , directed by Walter Beck, were shot in the stadium. According to a report in the Ostsee-Zeitung from May 31, 1960, 20,000 Wismar residents acted as extras in the scenes.

After the footballers withdrew from the Jahnplatz stadium over time, they did not return until 1997 when FC Anker Wismar was re-established . The club, which was able to attract more than 1000 spectators at weddings (for a friendly match against Hansa Rostock on February 21, 1998 it was even 8000), has been playing its home games in the Oberliga and Association league here ever since .

Although the sports facility was considered an exemplary arena in the 1950s, on which u. a. the later world record holder Marita Koch completed her first competitions, the cinder track is not very suitable for today's sporting events. Today's use is limited to footballers, youth sports games, bummi Olympics and school sports festivals.

The stadium , which has been a listed building since 2008, was renovated in 2018 .
