action

The village of Hangelin under Mayor Kallenbach fulfills many wishes of its children. A new school was built, and when it became apparent that the children like swimming and building sailboats, they were given a place to swim. Now, in the opinion of the mayor, they are following a “new craze”: the soccer game. Especially his son, the 12-year-old Rudi Kallenbach, is a big football fan and adores the player Kuddel Moll. He often sneaks secretly into the football stadium in the city and watches a game. One day Rudi and his friends miss their bus to Hangelin. The next one doesn't leave for an hour, so they watch a soccer game. They then stand in line for an autograph from Kuddel Moll and only return to their village in the late evening by horse and cart. Due to their enthusiasm for football, Rudi and his friend Fritz missed the trumpet rehearsal. Her teacher Berger, who also leads the small orchestra, sees a photo of Rudi and his friends in the local newspaper the next day, which she shows with Kuddel Moll. The classmates are outraged because Rudi let them down during the rehearsal for a soccer game. Soon, however, the entire class grasped the enthusiasm for football. They now play regularly in the village's cow pasture, which is used by the villagers as a garbage dump. The mayor leans towards a sports field for playing football, as playing football is just another whim of the children.

Meanwhile, Kuddel Moll is trying to get his boss to have his own children's and youth team that he wants to train. His boss refused. Kuddel Moll is called away from a training session because he is supposed to do a load of goods for the shipyard where he works in Hangelin. Here the football-playing children run in front of the car and Kuddel Moll has an accident while evading. He injured his foot and Rudi and his friends came to the shipyard the following day, worried. Kuddel Moll immediately recognizes that he has the children in front of him here, whom he could train for his own youth soccer team. A short time later, Rudi's entire class stands in front of him. Everyone wants to play football, but Kuddel Moll's boss doesn't want to know anything about it. Only a bet between him and Kuddel Moll changes him: If Kuddel Molls Junge wins a game against a team of young footballers, Rudi and his friends will be accepted into the BSG and may continue to train. The boys are enthusiastic, but Kuddel Moll has one condition: The school performance must not suffer from the training that takes place twice a week. If you write a 4, you will be excluded from the team until your grades have improved.

Rudi and Fritz are the best in the team, but also the worst in school. Both get a 4 on their next math assignment and have to leave the team. Fritz made an effort as a result, took tuition from better classmates and studied hard. Rudi, on the other hand, is certain that as a footballer he will not need any school knowledge later and that his team cannot do without him anyway. He thinks he knows that he will be brought into the team before the important game, regardless of his academic performance. He does not know that the teacher Berger is privy to Kuddel Moll's plans. Shortly before the game, the classmates ask teacher Berger to let Rudi and Fritz back on the soccer team. He tests their math skills on both of them in front of the class. While Fritz can solve the task at hand and can go back to the team, Rudi fails. He has to take a seat in the stands on the decisive day. During the important game, Rudi's friends lie in the back and Rudi begins to lace up his football boots. He believes that Kuddel Moll will let him play in order to win the game and thus his bet. However, he refuses. Rudi's friends win in the end even without him and are accepted into the BSG. Rudi should also become a member of the BSG as soon as he is back on the team. Rudi is now starting to study for school.

Training in the village is not possible for the children because their cow pasture has degenerated into a garbage dump again. In a secret night action, the children clear the rubbish from the pasture and put each villager's rubbish in front of the door. The action causes incredulous faces the next morning. The villagers reload their rubbish onto their horse-drawn wagons and want to dump it on the cow pasture. Not only are the children waiting here, but Mayor Kallenbach as well. He invites the villagers to take action right away: He has recognized that football is not just a new craze and has declared the cow pasture the new football field. All villagers should now lend a hand so that children and adults can play football in the village in the future. The children cheer and the adults spontaneously begin their first game in the pasture.

criticism

The contemporary criticism complained that dramaturgically "correctly arranged ... scenes" and the cinematic interpretation of these scenes are not always adequate. Nevertheless, a majority of the child actors are convincing; The film is also exciting in parts and is well received by young viewers.

For the film service , Der neue Fimmel was a "DEFA children's and sports film, staged in a didactic manner typical of the time."
