Kurt Thomas Abbott (born June 2, 1969 in Zanesville , Ohio ) is a retired American baseball player in Major League Baseball (MLB) on the positions of shortstop and second baseman . He won the 1997 World Series with the Florida Marlins .

Career

Abbott was selected in the 15th round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics . He first played on the franchise's farm teams . On September 7, 1993, at the age of 24, he made his MLB debut in the Athletics jersey against the Toronto Blue Jays . In the encounter he was used as a pinch runner . The Athletics won the game by eleven to seven. Abbott played another 19 games for the Athletics before he was exchanged on December 20, 1993 for Kerwin Moore to the Florida Marlins.

He spent most of his career with the Marlins and played there in four years around 100 games, most of them as shortstops. With the Marlins, he won four to three victories over the Cleveland Indians , the 1997 World Series . Abbott was used as a pinch hitter in three games in this series , but did not score a hit . On December 19, 1997 he was exchanged for Eric Ludwick back to the Oakland Athletics, but completed only 35 games there and switched to the Colorado Rockies during the current season , for whom he played until the end of 1999. Abbott signed the end of 1999 as a free agent a one-year contract with the New York Mets , for whom he in 79 games, mostly as a shortstop, ran aground and with whom he participated in the 2000 World Series , where they face the New York Yankees , took part played . The Mets lost the inner city duel with one to four games. For the 2001 season he moved to the Atlanta Braves for whom he played his last game in the MLB on April 13, 2001.

Personal

Abbott is married with two children. Since 2006 he has been working as a police officer in Martin County (Florida) .
