Kurt Oeser (born September 22, 1928 in Mainz-Kostheim , † September 8, 2007 in Mörfelden-Walldorf ) was a German Protestant clergyman. He worked as a parish pastor in Mörfelden since 1958 and became known nationwide as an "environmental pastor".

Education, work and family

Kurt Oeser studied theology in Mainz and Marburg and became a Protestant pastor in Mörfelden in 1958 at the age of 30. His son is the blues and jazz pianist Christoph Oeser .

Political commitment

From 1965 Oeser campaigned for Opel shift workers who suffered from aircraft noise. In 1967 he was a co-founder of the Federal Association against Aircraft Noise . The Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) appointed him from 1973 to 1992 as their environmental officer. He is a co-founder of the Blue Angel environmental label and has been an active member of its jury for decades.

Kurt Oeser was a city councilor in Mörfelden for a long time from 1968 . From 1972 to 1977 and from 1989 to 2001 he was head of the city council. He was also a member of the Groß-Gerau district council for 17 years .

He became known nationwide as an “environmental pastor” or “Startbahnpfarrer” through his involvement in the dispute about the expansion of Frankfurt Airport ( Startbahn West ), where he saw his role in mediation. The violent forms of protest that occurred in 1981 were not his business. Violent runway opponents were not bothered by it. Oeser saw the police murder on the runway, which finally brought the protests to a standstill, as a personal defeat.

From 1998 he headed the group of mediators for the Frankfurt airport expansion. The compromise solutions proposed here were not universally approved, especially by those who opposed expansion.

Honors

In 1975, Kurt Oeser received the Federal Cross of Merit for his environmental commitment . In 1990 he received the Federal Cross of Merit first class and in 2000 the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal of the State of Hesse. He also received the Bavarian Environment Prize.

In 2004 he became an honorary citizen of the city of Mörfelden-Walldorf.

In 2016 one of four meeting rooms in the main building of the district administration of the Groß-Gerau district was named "Kurt Oeser Room".
