Kurt Petzold (born March 26, 1936 in Schweinfurt ) is a German politician ( SPD ) and former Lord Mayor of Schweinfurt.

Life

Kurt Petzold studied law in Würzburg and then worked as a civil servant in the Bavarian state administration. In Schweinfurt he was first treasurer , then from 1972 to 1974 mayor , before he was elected mayor in 1974 as an SPD candidate . He held this office until 1992. His election results: 1974 56%; 1980 66%; 1986 59% Before the mayor election in 1992, their own city council faction had pushed through that Petzold could no longer run. With the election victory of the CSU candidate Gudrun Grieser , the era in which the SPD had always appointed the mayor of Schweinfurt since the Second World War ended .

During his tenure, Petzold pushed ahead with the renovation of the old town and the creation of the city's first pedestrian zone. He was responsible for the construction of the Leopoldina Hospital and the joint power station GKS. It was created in a cooperation between the city, the three large companies Fichtel & Sachs , Svenska Kullagerfabriken and Kugelfischer as well as two district communities. An agreement with the heirs of Georg Schäfer created the conditions for the later establishment of the Georg Schäfer Museum . The city ​​of Schweinfurt lost a lawsuit against the construction of the Grafenrheinfeld NPP in 1977. From 1982 to 1994, Petzold was a member of the Lower Franconia District Assembly , and from 1990 as chairman of the SPD parliamentary group.

After the end of his tenure as mayor, Petzold worked as a lawyer. In 2010 the city of Schweinfurt granted him honorary citizenship, and the SPD awarded him the Willy Brandt Medal in 2015 .

Petzold is married for the third time.
