The Kutaramakansee ( Russian Озеро Кутарамакан ) is an approximately 90 km² large lake in the Putorana Mountains , the northwestern part of the Central Siberian Mountains in the Krasnoyarsk region , Siberia , Russia ( Asia ).

Geographical location

Lake Kutaramakan is located around 250 km north of the Arctic Circle in the western part of the Putorana Mountains (max. 1701  m ). There are no settlements either by the lake or in its vicinity, but in some places there are isbas , traditional Russian wooden huts.

The surrounding mountains are west of the lake up to 1260  m high and east up to 1335  m . While the lake is fed by the Kutaramakan in the northeast and by the Irkinda coming from the east-southeast as well as numerous mountain streams, the Kutaramakan at its southwest end is its only drain, whose water ultimately flows over the distant Yenisei to the Kara Sea (part of the Arctic Ocean ). The Irkinda alluvial cone divides the lake in its central part, where the very narrow lake looks like a river when viewed from a bird's eye view, into the smaller northeast and larger southwest areas.

The lake, which extends approximately in a north-east-south-west direction and is about 109  m high, is about 50 km long and up to 2.3 km wide directly south of the Irkinda alluvial cone. Its catchment area is around 3,580 km².

In the catchment area of Lake Kutaramakan, in the east on the Irkinda, there is the small Manumaklisee and in the southwest on the small brook Kapchuk the Kapchuk as well as some small lakes and rivers. Outside this area, below the lake, there is a neighboring lake, the Chantai lake, which is fed by the Kutaramakan, among other things .

Climate, flora and fauna

The region of Lake Kutaramakan lies in the area of permafrost . The lake is covered by ice from the beginning of October to the end of June or the beginning of July every year . Boreal coniferous forests (taiga) thrive on its banks and tundra with mosses and lichens predominate on the many plateau-like mountains . Perch and salmon fish live in the fish-rich lake .
