Laujar de Andarax is a municipality in the autonomous region of Andalusia in southern Spain . It belongs to the province of Almería . In the last official, by the INE carried out census on 1 January 2019 had Laujar de Andarax 1,536 inhabitants. The community itself now speaks of around 1878 inhabitants. The Andarax River , which flows into the Mediterranean near Almería , has its source nearby .

Geographical location

Láujar de Andarax is located on the edge of the nature reserve of the Sierra Nevada (Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada). The distance to Almería in the east is approx. 60 km by road, that to Adra on the Mediterranean coast in the south approx. 40 km. The A 348 road to Almería runs along the Andarax, z. T. in his valley.

Láujar was once the residence of the Moorish kings.

Attractions

The town hall facade from the 18th century and the baroque chapel Nuestra Señora de la Salud are particularly noteworthy in the village, which is situated between poplar and pine forests .

About 10 km away is the small town of Paterna del Rio , which is known for its iron and sulfur-containing medicinal springs. It has 375 inhabitants.

The village of Fondón is about 4 km away in the direction of Almería . In 1567 this was the main scene of the Morisk uprisings . The parish church with its brick tower in the Mudejar style and the well made of carved stone on the market square in 1790 are striking .
