history

The newspaper was published on December 22, 1892 as the three times weekly Journal de Nyon et des Districts de la Côte by the printing company Rauschert & Cie. founded in Nyon. In contrast to what was common in publications at the end of the 19th century, it should follow a neutral and independent line. The following publishers were Julien Rauschert (1896–1899), Schenk & Cherix (1899–1904), Edouard Cherix (1904–1929), the widow Cherix (1929–1932) and Jacques Manz-Cherix (from 1932), a young, Merchant who moved from Schaffhausen and who had married Edouard Cherix's daughter Yvonne. From 1986 Manz's son Jean-Jacques Manz ran the Ets Ed. Cherix SA, part of the Filanosa publishing house, which has been owned by the family for four generations.

Head of the Morges Actualité newspaper as part of the Ouest Lémanique group , 1987

In 1943, the Cherix printing company bought the Feuille d'avis de la Côte from Rolle , which was founded in 1875 as a weekly newspaper and has been published twice a week since 1900, and integrated it into the Journal de Nyon and the twice-weekly Journal de Rolle , both already owned by Cherix. The publishers and editors of the Feuille d'avis de la Côte were L. Maire (1875–1890), É. Graf (from 1890) and A. Gueissaz (until 1943). It was called La Côte from 1878 to 1882 . According to this, the founding of La Côte can also be traced back to 1875. However, the newspaper celebrated its 100th and 125th anniversary as the successor to the Journal de Nyon in April 1992 and October 2017, respectively.

Head of the Ouest Lémanique with the three titles of the group, 1987

In 1976 the publishing house formed the group Ouest Lémanique with the newspapers Journal de Nyon , Journal de Rolle and Morges actualité and used this name as a subtitle for the three newspapers. The weekly local newspaper Echo du Petit-Lac from Versoix was also part of the group, but not initially integrated into the newspaper. From 1987, Ouest Lémanique became the main edition for a short time and the regional editions Journal de Nyon , Journal de Rolle and Morges actualité became subtitles. On June 9, 1987, the newspaper changed to the weekday (Monday to Friday) and morning instead of afternoon publication, integrated in addition to the previous regional editions, the weekly newspapers Echo du Petit-Lac and Morges-Hebdo and renamed itself Le Quotidien de La Côte . On May 6, 1996, the newspaper shortened the name to La Côte and introduced a multimedia section.

First head of La Côte , 1987

In July 2001, the Ets Ed. Cherix SA was taken over by Editions Suisses Holding SA (ESH) by Philippe Hersant, making it the first Swiss newspaper to be part of Groupe Hersant Média . The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Cherix SA is Fabien Wolfrath, former co-owner of Société Neuchâteloise de Presse , which also belongs to Hersant.

Since 2015, La Côte, together with the other Swiss titles from Hersant Le Nouvelliste and ArcInfo (until the end of 2017 L'Express and L'Impartial ), have been using the coat produced by La Liberté for national news. Before that, the platform Agence romande de presse in Neuchâtel , founded by ESH, produced the coat. At that time, the Journal du Jura , which belongs to the Gassmann Group, was also involved.

Editors-in-chief

The first editor was Julius Théodore Wellauer, school director in Nyon, curator of the municipal museum and member of the Société de développement . After that, the publishers Julien Rauschert, Edouard Cherix and Jacques Manz-Cherix were also editor-in-chief (or individual editor). His son Jean-Jacques Manz was then editor-in-chief under him. After his move to management, the editors-in-chief came from outside in 1976.

pressure

For the printing of La Côte and its other newspapers, ESH is building a printing center in Monthey , which should be operational by the beginning of 2019 at the latest. Previously, La Côte had been printed since 2002 in the printing center of the Société Neuchâteloise de Presse of ESH in Neuchâtel . Since it was closed at the end of April 2015, it has been printed in the Tamedia print shop in Bussigny .

Varia

In 1991 and 1992 austerity measures by the publisher Jean-Jacques Manz caused a sensation. After freezing the salaries of the editors in 1991, he fired all non-editorial staff at the end of 1992 in order to circumvent the inflation indexation of wages and immediately hired them again.

In February 1996, out of anger over a series of what it considered to be unfair articles in the Quotidien de La Côte about political and economic problems in the city and their causes , the Morges town council boycotted the newspaper. After a discussion with the publisher Jean-Jacques Manz and the editor-in-chief Gilles Vallat, the boycott was lifted again.

In June 1997 the businessman Jürg Stäubli, accused of falsifying accounts (and later convicted), sued La Côte for articles that he believed defamed him and demanded payment of around CHF 1 million from the newspaper. The lawsuit was dismissed in 1998 by the Nyon Civil Court.

2005 complained La Côte against 24 heures of (then) Edipresse because they wanted to publish a regional edition with the addition of "Région la Côte". Hersant offered Edipresse the transfer of the name Ouest Lémanique , which they refused. The action was dismissed by the Cantonal Court of Vaud. This means that 24 heures may temporarily use the title “Région la Côte”.

At the beginning of 2018, the newspaper, which was in financial trouble, cut two of 19 posts and then asked the authorities for financial support in the amount of 100,000 francs. Daniel Rosellat, long-time Mayor of Nyon, is positive about the request. Parliament has to decide.
