La déesse des mouches à feu (in German Die Göttin der Feuerfliegen ; English-language festival title: Goddess of the Fireflies ) is a Canadian fictional film for young people directed by Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette from 2020 . The coming-of-age film had its world premiere on February 22, 2020 at the Berlinale in the Generation 14plus section .

On her 16th birthday, Catherine, who lives in Quebec, receives a yellow CD player , the book We Children from Zoo Station , and she can now go to the mall. On this day, her father purposely drives her mother's jeep into a wall. Catherine is living through her adolescence when her parents' divorce process begins. But the young person is mainly busy keeping Mélanie Belley at bay, who is terrorizing her for no reason. When she teases her friend Pascal, Catherine gains status in the group. She is eager to learn everything, but her journey of discovery is neither gentle nor romantic. The first fall in love, the first sex: after Pascal comes Kevin. A turning point in her life is looming: her new clique brings her into contact with mescaline , which soon determines her life, and she continues to slide away. In a drug frenzy, she frees herself from the verbally and emotionally brutal arguments of her parents. In the violent chaos of the Canadian province of the 1990s, the grunge era, she comes of age. Punk rock , Kurt Cobain's suicide and the look of Mia Wallace are closely related to the young people's attempts to free themselves.

The director was the filmmaker and writer Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette, who already showed her films Le ring (2006) and Inch'Allah (2012) at the Berlinale .

The script was written by Catherine Léger . It is based on Geneviève Pettersen 's first novel of the same name from 2013. Jonathan Decoste was the cameraman , Stéphane Lafleur was responsible for the film editing and Mathieu Charbonneau composed the music . It was filmed in Chicoutimi , Québec , and in Montreal. Over half of the scenes were filmed at night, because, according to the director, this is the preferred time of day for young people.

Luc Vandal was the producer, and Coop Vidéo de Montréal was selected as the production company . Cooperation partners were CBC / Radio-Canada and Super Écran . National distribution is organized by Entract Films , while world distribution is in the hands of WaZabi Films , Montreal. Financial support came from the regional Canadian film funding SODEC, Téléfilm Canada and the Harold Greenberg Fund .

The film will celebrate its world premiere on February 22, 2020 at the Berlinale and will be screened there in the Generation 14plus section .

The theatrical release in Quebec is planned for the fall of 2020.

Awards

At the Berlinale 2020, the film took part in the Generation 14plus competition for the Transparent Bear for the best film , which is awarded by a jury made up of seven young people.
