action

As usual every Sunday, "Carlitos" receives a call on his ninth birthday from his mother Rosario, who lives and works in Los Angeles, in order to enable them to have a better future one day. Carlitos, who has not seen his mother for four years and is suffering from the separation, lives with his grandmother. When she suddenly dies one night, he turns to a young Chicano couple to help them cross the border between the United States and Mexico . But at the border control, the customs officers noticed that the couple still owed them, so they confiscated their car. Carlitos, who is in a secret compartment under the back seat, is not discovered and he is able to free himself at night. In doing so, however, he loses his wallet, so that he is penniless and cannot afford the bus ticket for the onward journey from El Paso to Los Angeles.

In a public toilet at the bus station, he meets a young junkie who drives him to the place where the confiscated car is parked for the promised sum of one hundred US dollars , because Carlitos suspects his wallet is still there. However, the car has since been picked up so Carlitos can't pay the junkie. Thereupon he drives with Carlos to the red light district and wants to sell him to a pimp for the children's stroke. The Mexican woman Reyna happens to come by and prevent this "deal". Instead, she takes Carlos home with her, where she also gives other "illegals" temporary shelter. There is also a guest there who wants to go to Los Angeles with two friends the next day and who is supposed to take the boy with him. Before they start the trip, however, the three men and Carlos are still working for a few hours in a warehouse when the police suddenly appear and check the workers. Although Carlos escapes arrest by hiding on the premises, he loses the three friends who, for their part, escape arrest by escaping in good time.

When Carlos leaves his hiding place, he meets Enrique, who has also been hiding from immigration officials. Together they hitchhike to Tucson , find work in a restaurant kitchen and a free night. As they lie on the bed at night, Carlos stares at the moon and tells Enrique the words that gave the film its name: “My mom said that when I am longing, then I should look at the moon. Because she sees it at this moment too. So I am close to her and not sad. Even if I miss it. ”Carlos then explains that his father, whom he never met, lives in Tucson. Enrique encourages Carlos to contact his father. After initial hesitation, he arranged a meeting with his father, which initially seemed to have a positive outcome. The man is obviously moved to meet his son and apparently has feelings for Rosario too. He promises to pick up Carlitos in the evening and take him to Los Angeles.

But Carlos is once again disappointed because he waits in vain. So Enrique, against his original intention, takes the boy to Los Angeles on a long-distance bus. However, Carlos only has a PO box address and a description of the area around the phone booth from which his mother always calls him. Although Enrique and Carlos search the whole area around the PO box address, they cannot find the telephone box from which his mother would call him again tomorrow, Sunday. They spend the night together on a park bench and decide to look for his mother everywhere in the area the next day.

Enrique gets some breakfast the next morning while Carlitos is still sleeping. When he comes back, he sees two police officers trying to take the boy away. In order to enable Carlitos to search further for his mother, he sacrifices his own freedom. He throws the coffee at the officers and allows himself to be arrested while yelling at Carlos to leave. On his escape, Carlos happened to pass the phone booth he was looking for, where his mother, who was informed by a phone call from Doña Carmen that her son was on the road as an “illegal”, was already waiting for him.

Immigrants in the USA

As Rosario and Alicia ride a city bus through Los Angeles, a radio program is playing in the background, on which a spokesperson explains: “In a speech, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that he would vote against a bill that would allow two and a half million illegals to enter to move freely in our country. The governor of California refuses to pass a law that threatens public safety. "Then a second voice says:" I think the governor is threatening us. "The first voice continues:" These opinions are already expanding Parts of the population discussed and are sure to provide plenty to talk about in the next few weeks. ”Again the second voice:“ The man has a good laugh. He is an immigrant himself . He comes from Austria - and that is probably further away than Mexico. "
