geography

The place Lacluta is located in the Suco Ahic , about 44 km northwest of the municipal capital Viqueque and about 24 km southeast of the state capital Dili . Lacluta is 303 meters above sea level.

history

Lacluta was one of the traditional kingdoms of Timor, ruled by a liurai . It appears on a list of Afonso de Castro , a former governor of Portuguese Timor who listed 47 empires in 1868 and was an ally of Portugal as early as the 18th century .

In 1811 Lacluta rebelled against the tribute payments to Portugal.

In 1976 Lacluta was a retreat for the FALINTIL , who fought against the Indonesian invaders. Here she founded a base de apoio , a resistance base that offered refuge for refugees from Lacluta, Ossu , Baucau and Viqueque. The base was later destroyed by the Indonesians. Those who surrendered here were interned and suffered from hunger. They could neither plant anything nor fetch fresh water. Children and the elderly in particular died. Survivors report:

“In 1979 we surrendered in the old town of Lacluta. Around 500 people died of starvation and the lack of drugs to fight tuberculosis, marasmus and diarrhea. Many who died had no family members to bury them. Some died in the camp and some while looking for something to eat in the forest. We survived on food like:

  • Sago from the bebak palm
  • Fruits of the rubber tree
  • Guavas
  • Leaves from the end of the coconut
  • Maek (a tuber)
  • Kuan (a small, fibrous yam root)
  • Aidak (a kind of lychee)
  • Water spinach
  • Banana saplings
  • Laho (mice)
  • Samea (snakes)
  • Manduku (frogs)

Horses were bought from the Hansip for only 1,000 Indonesian rupiah and two cans of rice for one meal ( rantang ) each . Gold chains could be bought for a can of rice. In exchange for food such as buffalo or deer meat , daughters of Hansip and ABRI members could be forcibly married, even if they were already legally married.

ABRI and the sub- district administrator ( camat ) decided to move the internees from the old city of Lacluta to the village of Dilor , which today is the administrative center of the administrative office. "

At the beginning of March 1981 in Lacluta , Xanana Gusmão was elected as head of FALINTIL at a secret national conference to succeed the killed Nicolau dos Reis Lobatos .
